What causes Franklins to have crackled toning?
Here are two examples of what I am talking about.

It was the mint set packaging that caused that sort of toning. That 49 is fabulous. They rarely come looking that nice.

usually not eyeappealing toning, some coins with cracked toning look great.
that frankie there is one.
nice.
i thought i read somewhere where someone wrote the planchet washing process
had something to do with some type of toning, or lack of eye appealing toning.
maybe it was peace dollars.....

Are you thinking that this crackly toning is something particular to Franklins?

I'll go along with Woody's hunch that it had to do with how the paper laid on the coin and for what length of time that finally gave it that color and texture

I agree with the mint set packaging being the cause of such toning. Man you got to love that 49

Hell, I don't know. I'd have to say that most that I've seen have come out of mint sets.

I raised this same question in another thread yesterday- MS franklins are the only series I can think of that has so much of this "crackled" type of toning.....

I think its really caused by "FRANK" trying to get out of the coin!!!
