Picked this up Raw on Ebay.......as a EF???

Ok I am typically prone to get overgraded junk on Ebay whether it be comics, coins or cardsimage

I think my luck might be changing as I picked this up raw as an EF40....and there was no pictures, I just had to take the dealers word for it. I figured for $6.50 I'd take a chance.

Does any one think this is an EF40.......to me it looks like at least an AU50.....maybe an outside shot at AU55. In person their is virtually no wear visable and lots of mint luster. When I scaned it, it looks like there is a flat spot of wear above the forhead, but I think the large scan is making it look worse than it is.

So Opinions????

    VF-35 all day long.

Just kidding, it looks like an XF. Hard to tell if it's been messed with though. The scan is a little bright.

  • Looks like EF details to me too. Does it look original in person?

  • Yep, looks completely original and has about 80% mint luster. Honestly to the naked eye you can see only tiny traces of wear. The falt spot on the scan can not be seen by the naked eye. I have owned a lot of EF-40's and I have always been able to spot the wear at a glance.

Kepp the opinions coming.....if it's an EF then it's a nice Ef and I can live with that. It's not a rare or expensive coin by any stretch, but I like it image
  • Neat coin with a lot of history. Judging from the scan I would have to guess XF45. image

Nice coin- I say AU. I know about scanners and big pix. That's why I bought a digital camera. Now I just need to learn how to use it and edit with existing hp editor if it's possible. Gotta play with it. For once, it appears someone got a great deal on a raw coin amazingly, with no pix. I hope my $6 quarter is every bit as good as it looks and the guy claims it is. Niceimage

Looking at the Reverse, doing a double take...at 9 0'clock on the outside, is that rim damage?
  • Sure sounds like an AU. What I picked as some wear is probably just a little pixelation of the picture and my cheap monitor. image

Id say it looks Au-50 to 53. Although, There's only about a 2.50 price jump to AU on this date!

    It appears there is someimage

I totally missed it since to the naked eye it just looks like a slight scuff. Under a high powered look it looks like a few tiny nicks, but it's almost invisable to the naked eye.....good call though....image
  • I would guess about AU50

  • You think it's cleaned image

Is it just a bad scan or do you see tell tale signs that it's cleaned???

XF-40 to AU-50 if it's original. Nice catch!

Boy, you guys are tough. I have to agree that the surfaces looked too dull and the coin very well may have been cleaned. But, in all honesty, if we're talking the actual amount of wear this coin received ( NOT its net grade) I'd bump the coin to an AU 55. The rim bruise at 9 O'Clock on the reverse may be worse than it appears on the scan. If you were to net grade this coin, then I'd have to go with XF 40.

This coin was frequently found in circulation ( according to my grandfather ) in the 1930's depression era in Boston. He socked away about twenty of these. I have most of them still, and this coin was the foundation to my set of "V" nickels.
