My card collecting dream...

...would be to stroll into some old antique store in a small town somewhere in the midwest, and notice a box labelled "Piedmont Cigarettes". It is an unopened case of Piedmonts. I pull out a pack and the tax stamp reads "1910". The lady behind the counter says she will not trade in cigarettes, and offers me the case for $200. I pay her and head straight for Newport Beach.

And then I wake up!

I think someone had their dream come true about 5 years ago. An article in baseball's beckett. Although it wasn't a case, it was a pack of Piedmont (perfectly sealed) in a cigar box with a bunch of older baseball cards. The antique shop owner only charge this individual for the old cigar box (can't recall the price, but cheap). He took it to a card shop and got about 10K for the whole thing. 5K in cards, and 5K in cash. I don't know whatever became of that pack. Probably locked up somewhere.

That would be pretty cool. Like the kid 10 or 12 years ago that bought a Nolan Ryan Rc for $10 or $20, I forget the amount. The clerk at the store read the zero's wrong. That was a big story in its day.

This may be a dumb question, but what did Mr. Mint do prior to buying collections? I mean where did he get all the dough to do so.
  • he ran a vacuum cleaner business in the late 70's, quit, got a loan for $25k (i think), and got in to the card business. he also sold coins in the early days, i believe

he was the yellow Teletubbie wasn't he?
  • Sadly, I read both of Mr Mints books way back in the day. I think he got started selling copiers, antiques and all kinds of stuff in the 70's. Then he went to a baseball card show, re discovered cards again.....and the rest is history.....
