Scoreboard autos...

Is it just me, or does this look like one bad scoreboard auto?

Mantle Auto

This guy is selling every one ever made. My question is, are these real "scoreboard" autos, or did he potentially fake them? This Mantle looks so far from a real mantle auto that I can't even imagine it being authentic. I know scoreboard stuff has little to no value anyway, but what's the story with these?

Anyone know?

I agree, that Mantle looks fake. I took a look at a few others including the Nolan Ryan, and I would DEFINITELY stay away from these. The Ryan is totally bogusimage

    Ryan fake SB? auto

Edited to add that I just noticed the seller is one of our "buddies" from Hong Kongimage
  • He's got good feedback and the feedback is based on a ton of signed cards.. however the signatures are pretty damn ugly.. Wonder how those two cards would do at PSA/DNA

It's bad. I bought two Marcus Allen Scoreboard autos from this guy, and they looked bad, but the stamp looked right so I thought nothing of it. I got an e-mail a few weeks later from someone else who got scammed by this guy. He told me that the guy bought the stamp when Scoreboard liquidated, and recently started making fake autos with it.

  • yes, that guy has been discovered to be in the posession of a Scoreboard "Authentic Autograph" embosser

some of his fake autos are so bad they're just funny

AHA! That makes perfect sense. The autos were terrible. The Aikman was the only one that even looked close! The Emmitt Smith was awful, the Mantle was awful... I was trying to figure out why a bunch of 82 donruss "originals" were signed with a Scoreboard COA when those came out in 03 and Scoreboard went bankrupt around 95. I just knew something had to be amiss.

Thanks guys! I wasn't interested in buying them, I just wanted to see if anything added up and now, unfortunately it adds up to a scam. Suppose I should start emailing some high bidders and ebay.

Ahhh...The police work never ends. image

You guys rock as usual. Thanks again.

Not only is the Mantle autograph fake, there was never such a thing as Scoreboard "packs." All the items that Scoreboard sold were individual in nature (i.e. autographed balls, bats, pictures, etc.).

Actually Scoreboard did have packs of cards - minor league and draft pack stuff. And they did have legitimate autos inserted in the packs with the embossment, often of major leaguers. That this guy has the original stamp is what makes it tough to spot the fraud.

Well, Mantle high bidder has been emailed, so has the seller, so has ebay. My work is never done.

I got left holding the bag when scoreboard went bankrupt too. I had purchased a couple boxes of the Visions Signings product. I had several auto'd hockey pucks, balls, and a bat waiting to be redeemed when they went belly up. Didn't get a single one. Oh and my redemptions? They were Gordie Howe (1 plaque - 8x10 autod, an auto'd puck, a Pete Rose bat, Eddie George 8x10 and Keyshawn Johnson ball.) Too bad I never got any of them, of course most of them were probably fakes as well.

I did have the pleasure of seeing Mr. Goldin's face on the "Ultimate Sports Collectibles Show" the other night. Selling "50! That's right 50 LE-BRON-J-AMES-ROO-KIE-CARDS!" Interestingly enough... WCG 10 City Heights and 49 Lebron box set cards... for only $99.95. The guy just keeps going...

Anyway, lets see if/what ebay does... I'm interested to see what the seller has for a response too. I told him the least he could do was look at Mantles sig before he tried to forge it. The Bonds auto is laffable too. Unbelievable, at least do the buyer a favor and make a good fake. These are just horrible.

I remember reading about that - I believe most think that Kenny G. screwed everyone and left a lot of people holding the bag.
As it goes for autos from Scoreboard - anything purchased in the very early 90z is probably OK since they honestly did have Mantle, e.g., under contract before the explosion of the collectibles market. You could get an auto ball from a Pennies catalog for around 50$ back then.

  • Yep these are fake autographs, I've sent a few to PSA/DNA and they were all rejected.
