Question about line numbers on submission and results...

Ok- whilst I have been fussing and moaning about my grade results, I came to a conclusion that might ease my suffering tremendously. On my submission form I listed four coins, two of which were 1913 buffalo nickels. One of them I submitted as a proof, and the other as a business strike. The suspected proof was line #2 on the submission form, and the business strike was line #3 on the submission form. The results were that one of them graded MS64, and the other MS66. (Boy this is getting long to explain- don't worry we're almost there!) I assumed that the MS64 must be the business strike coin, since the suspect proof coin is far superior in every aspect. However! On the results, line #2 corresponds to the "proof" (MS64) and line #3 corresponds to the business stike (MS66). My question is this- do the line numbers on the submission form and the line numbers on the results page correspond, or are they simply listed in the order that they were graded?

If the line numbers correspond, then I am thinking that the suspect proof actually graded PF64 (mistakenly entered as MS64 instead of PF64) and it was the business strike that graded MS66 (which would make much, much more sense). Pictures follow so you can see my dilema. I of course have not received the coins back from PCGS yet, so I don't know what the actual holder slip says yet. Are data entry errors like this seen often, or should I pretty much count that out as a possibility?

Check out the pictures, and please tell me if I'm way off here. Tell me the truth- I'm a big boy, I can take it.

Subission order:
1 1924S
2 1913 (proof suspect)
3 1913 (business strike)
4 1935D

Results order:
1 21645126 1924-S 5C USA F15
2 21645127 1913 5C Type 1 USA MS64
3 21645128 1913 5C Type 1 USA MS66
4 21645129 1935-D 5C USA MS65

The first picture is of the suspect proof, the next two are the business strike. Neither of these coins look like MS64 to me!

Did you list the nickel as a proof on the submission form?

Looks nice, better then 64 from picture

    I don't buy slabs I make them
  • That's another wrench in the works... On the submission form I did list the coin number for proof, and put PR as the designation. However, I attached a post-it note to the form asking them to slab it as a business strike if they determine that it is not a proof. I did this so that the coin would be holdered no matter what. I figured that I would at least get it in plastic if I was paying for it. They might have slabbed it anyway as a business strike if I hadn't given them the note, but I wasn't sure. I didn't want it to come back BB because the coin wasn't the designation I put on the submission form.
PF64 is about what I expected from it (there were very slight imperfections) so that would make sense, but never MS64. image

The graders do not see the note. If it was a proof, they would have changed the number for you. It's likely to be a better struck business strike coin.
  • Change which number? If it was a proof they wouldn't have had to change anything- because I submitted it as a proof (coin #3988). I wouldn't be terribly upset if it were a nicely struck business issue, however, I have seen MS67s in PCGS holders with more marks and less strike. I guess I will just have to wait and see what actually arrives in the mail before making any decisions about regade options.

Thank you to those who have provided their input- it is much appreciated!

I would say call customer service.... I'm sure they can check it.
