2004 Silver Proof Sets - STUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have collected every single clad & silver proof set since the program started in 1999 and the sets that I received from the mint this afternoon are of the highest quality I have ever seen. Each coin has stunning mirrors and WHITE, WHITE, WHITE FROSTY SURFACES. If I had any guts, I'd break up the sets and send in a couple for grading. Gotta be a few 70 DCAM's in there. WOW. Has the mint stepped it up a notch. Nah, must have just gotten lucky this time.

    Congratulations on your sets!

The three I received are about to be sent back as they are mottled and spotted and the Michigan's, although cammed, have got a lot of rays and specs in the backgrounds. Needless to say, I was not impressed with the quality! image

    Edited to add photos.......

    Some haze on the Florida

Granted, there is some dust inside the slab but the rays are on the coin on all three sets both rev and obv

Again, there is some dust in the slab but there are also rinse spots on this Sac.

I thought they looked extra nice also. The deep mirrors and the super white frosty motifs, especially the silver proofs. Knockout eye appeal. I didn't feel so bad about the price increase, after getting mine. The San Francisco Mint has been noted for quality, even back in early coinage. image

I got 6 sets yesterday. The quality is some better than last year. The portrait area of the Kennedy half is mottled with "stars" tho.

I wonder how many folks would be interested in "select" proof sets where each coin is handpicked by someone with a trained eye.

I ordered 20 silver sets and all have a problem. 7 of them had cracked cases because they threw the sets in with a heavy 1,000 coin bag, and the rest have spots or haze, like 19Lyds posted pictures. Lots of haze in the middle of the Florida and around the rim of the Michigan. Many of the Sacs and Lincolns had spots. The quality this year is the worst I've seen so far.

Thanks for the reply Tony! For a while there, I thought I had received the only 3 bad sets in the country.......

My sets were not impressive either. 4 out of my 5 sets are getting sent back. The Sac was really the worst coin... lots of rinse spots. Most of the sets had dust and lint inside of them. Several of the quarters had crud and debris struck into them. And, as mentioned, plenty of lines radiating in the fields. Perhaps these were some of the earliest sets? before ironing out any problems? Regardless, I will be sending some back.

Odd... the clad sets I received earlier were fantastic!

the 04s are nice looking set, some of the quarter have very plan designs this year but the nickels are killer.
