My MNS Show Report (includes Scotsman Auction Update)

Today was Day #2 of the three day Missouri Numismatic Society annual summer coin show. There was a reasonable amount of floor traffic today, but many dealers said traffic and sales were brisker yesterday. I met up with Jaywalker at the Jade Coins table and spoke with Joe, James, and Dennis a bit. James showed me two very original, circulated 18th century bust halves that were beautiful. If you collect these or need one for a type set, contact James ASAP! I looked for mrcommem, but I could not find him. I ran into one of my work partners with his two sons (age 7) introducing them to coin collecting. I saw more younger people and families than I remember seeing in the past.
I saw very little rare date gold and none worth mentioning. This show has never been a good place to find nice rare date gold, so I was not surprised. As usual, there were lots of Morgans, Frankies, etc. Most of the stuff was raw, lots of second tier slabs, some NGC slabs, and the fewest number of coins were in PCGS slabs.
As for the Scotsman auction, it was described as "nuts." The 1792 half disme in net G4 hammered at $18,000! and the MS-65 1916 SLQ at $41,000. The auction results will not be officially posted until Monday.
As for my purchases, I bought the Breen monographs on $3's and Liberty $5's, and the Whitman Classic Buffalo Nickels album for my son. I will take him to the show tomorrow, and we will pick out some nickels.
Have a nice weekend!

Also talked with Alan, who recently wrote a book on 3-cent nickels and was selling copies. Seems like he has really done a lot of research. Should be a good resource if you're into that series.
I'm working on a set of uncirculated Peace dollars (on a budget). Didn't find much that was really eye-appealing that I needed. All I could find yesterday was a 27-D in MS62 that looked very nice for the grade. But just before I left today, I found a 35-S in PCGS 64 that I really liked. That made my day.
See you all at the Silver Dollar show this fall!
Were most of the dealers locals or were there some national/regional dealers there?

I seemed to have missed you at the show today. I was there about 1:30 to 3:00. I didn't find anything that I could use. Since I mainly collect classic commems and Dahlonega gold, I saw next to nothing that would upgrade my collections. What surprised me the most was the lack of PCGS coins. I would say that NGC coins outnumbered PCGS coins 15 or 20 to one, maybe more extreme than that. Has this been occurring at other shows? Anyway, good material was hard to find. Sorry I didn't meet up with you.

didn't that coin have quite a few "problems"??
did you get to view it in person?
There was a sprinkling of local, regional, and (fewer) national dealers. John Hamrick (or his representative) was there and looked very board. Tom Reynolds, a regional early copper specialist, was there and had lots more non-copper coins than I usually see in his display.

Come to think of it, I did not see a single decent commem, and I saw three Dahlonega coins, all problem coins. Rob, it would be tough to "upgrade" your collection.
Goose, I did see the 1792 half disme, and it is a dog. A very historic and expensive dog.
Did you see how you did at the auction?
How did I do?

I do not know how CL did, and I do not know if I won the exquisitely tab-toned Oregon set. My bid was not especially strong, so I expect that I lost.
