How a life can change in 1 year.....

Dennis88Dennis88 Posts: 5,797 ✭✭✭
Last year around this time, I was saving for a coin from the Netherlands I would like to have. It was around $75 for the coin. At that time, it was quite a lot for me. I was 14 then, and didn't had a job. The coin arrived on my birthday, and got really excited when I received it.... It was my most expensive coin by then.... On my birthday, I also received the red book along with some other coin books. I had looked on the internet for US coins, but this was the first time I really got into them.

Now a year later, everything looks like it changed. I don't collect coins from the Netherlands anylonger. In the meantime, I've collected wheat cents, but because the set is so big, I sold them. ATM I'm collecting the US 20th century major gold design type set in AU-58. I only have one coin out of 8, but with some luck I get 3 more this yearimage

I'm now making more than $100 each month with delivering newspapers at 6 AM in the morningimage I think it's pretty good for an almost 16 year old. My main preferences are now US gold and US patterns, altough I can't afford the last yet. I still enjoy them by study them and writing articles.

As last year $75 was already much, this year I hope to add the following to my type set:

-20th century liberty quarter eagle
-Indian quarter eagle
-Saint-Gaudens double eagle

I could only dream about those coins last year....

And I hope to set up some little private internet-based company to make websites for collectors. Still have to work on that tough. If anyone is interested, please PM me. I'm sure we can work something out.

    hey Dennis

you go!!!!!!! i applaud your effort and work ethic, the fact that you have a realistic goal, a plan to attain it and aren't afraid to work for it.

i remember my paper route back in the mid-60's and how i'd sit on the floor and go through the change picking out "Gems" for my starting collection every week before i paid up on Tuesday. good luck.image

Dennis: I've been very impressed with how quickly you established yourself as a serious student of American numismatics, and in particular patterns. You've already posted two great pattern-related articles that were very well researched. Keep it up, and you'll be the next Saul Teichman in the pattern field.image

Dennis- Your collecting tastes will change many times over the years and I think you will be amazed at the coins your collecting when your pushing 50.image The great thing you've learned early on is the importance of educating yourself. I am very impressed by your thirst for knowledge. Keep up the good work.image

I applaud your parents for teaching you to set goals and write them down. I hope you do this for the rest of your life.

    Dennis,

That's awesome, dude. Just wait until you hold your first $1000+ coin (that you bought) in your hands. YOu get an adrinalen shot that's almost like a high.... not that I've ever been high or anything.

...btw... did you get that coin I sent to you?

  • Congrats Dennis.....You should be proud of yourself, in an era when a lot of young adults your age are playing hip hop and into all sorts of trouble..Good luck to you in your quest. They way you are doing it, will be very satisfying to you upon completion.

    Dennis,

Your work ethic is to applauded. I believe you are on your way to a very successful career, whatever it may be. I happen to work for a large paper in the midwest and know your "business" very well. Unlike most spoiled brats who are given $$ by mommy and daddy you truly understand the value of the greenback. Don't waste your money getting caught up in slabs and "pop" reports at this point. Concentrate on the basics like being able to grade all series. Although other YN's may have better coins at this point, you know what work means. That's more valuable than any MS66 or MS65 coin that you will never remember when you are in your 30's like this old fart!!! I still have my raw Lincolns from the 70's when I was growing up and those are my most valuable coins. Chris

In three years, they'll be ancient history. You're on the fast track.

Dennis was the winner of my 500th post give-away. He answered my post for a YN within 2 minutes. It wasn't all that hard a question for us older collectors, but I thought I'd stump a YN and make him/her do a little digging in the Red Book. He shot back the answer faster than I could have at his age.

He's on the fast track alright.

By the way, Dennis, the oldest coin I own is a Dutch coin dated 1654 which use to circulate in New Netherlands (New York). My grandfather got in change as a half dollar back in the 1950's.

Good luck to you in your new job. 6 am is very early. I used to have a paper route when I was in high school, but I delivered in the afternoon. 6 am would be tough on me. I also used my money to buy coins. I went to these small auctions and bought interesting US coins for $5 to $15. This was in 1989-1990 when slabbed coins were so expensive.
