Strike vs. Pizzazz dilema

WondoWondo Posts: 2,916 ✭✭✭
I have a dilemma. Got a stunning $20 Lib sent to me today - it glows, cartwheels, and is a fine (see I didn't say PQ image) example of an MS63 coin. First glance I would say 64 if I was asked to grade it ( But I ain't no expert). Anyway, Upon closer examination, the strike is a little soft on stars one and two and on the reverse eagle's neck. image

Winter's book says these guys are generally well-struck. I don't know - that is my only reference. Does anyone know more about the striking characteristics of the 1893s $20 Lib?

The eye appeal is excellent, but the strike is not as strong as is possible. Any info, input, or advice would be appreciated. image

Thanks.
Wondo

    Mark,

I don't care what the other board members say about you. image

You are a good guy in my book. image

When are you gonna get some $20's in stock?

Luster is nice, but I'm a strike kind of guy. Give me a fully struck coin with less luster than a super lusterous, poorly struck coin any day.

I, on the other hand, am a lustre guy. So, if it's basically a bullion date as opposed to a scarce "collecting" date, I'd go with eye appeal.
    When in doubt, don't.

    Oh.

For some reason, my eyes read this title as "Strike vs. Pizza".

I've never worked anywhere that went on strike, but it doesn't sound like fun.

I like pizza, though. No contest. image

PS- as to the REAL topic of this thread, I would have to say I usually go for luster and pizzazz over strike, but it depends on a coin-by-coin analysis, as well as the type.

PS- (again)-if the luster cartwheels on that coin, like you said, a slightly flat star or two would not stop me from pouncing on it.

A $20 Lib with cartwheel luster is a beautiful sight.

Wondo, I've been trying to buy choice ones (MS 63 and better) at a few dollars back of spot and not having any luck. I'm getting ready to bite the bullet, up my buy price to spot and hope to have dozens of "gems" available any minute now.image
