Best Cards of the 60's early 70's

For what its worth the best looking star cards are

1969 Bench, 1969 N. Ryan, 1970 Brooks Robby (at Yankees Stadium with Flag in background),
1965 Mantle, 1964 maris, 62 torre, 1966 Ford, 1969 Gibson .

Any opinions?

    1971 Topps Lowell Palmerimageimage

    Steve
  • You are right, the 67 set is the best of the decade.

By the way, thats not Lowell Palmer, its Stevie Wonder.

Also, check out the underarm hair on the 59 gil Hodges.

Also check out the 69 Bob Humphries (senators, 1st series) card, is he on drugs?

Why does D Mclain have that dopey look on the 71 card (i know why personal Problems, playing for Sens, Ted Williams great managing, etc.).

I know I am in the minority but I like the 63T set - when the color borders are on, they look sharp to me. I also like the 64T standups for the same reason.

  • Mike - You are not in the minority on the 63 set. Great colors and photographs. Definite step up from the 62 set. 63 Banks, Koufax and Mantle are classic cards.

  • Does anybody know who the guy is in the plaid shirt behing Steve Blass's 1967 card.

Also, speaking of Jim Grant, his 1969 expo card has him in an Indian uniform, about five years earlier.

Billy Cowen's 1969 Yankees card has him in a mets uni.

Imagine if topps had used a little brains and issued cards of recently retired players (e.g. 67 Koufax, 69 Maris, 69 E Howard, etc)

Oh the advantages of no competition......

  • Couple of favorites:

    1971 and 1974 Nolan Ryan
    1970 Reggie Jackson
    1969 Johnny Bench

My favorites: The entire '61 Topps 4th series, including the Mantle #300. These cards all had some color enhancing done that make each one look like a small painting.

I know we won't have a lot of people behind us except perhaps people like Buckwheat, but I really like the 61T design alot also!
I have most all the major players - I will scan my favorite if I get a chance later. I like the 65z and 67z, but the 61z and 63z are tops in my book!
    thanx
