Dealer question.

I was thinking, I don't know anyone at the shows name even. Maybe the good guys, that I buy from I should introduce myself, and after i've bought something(to show them I mean business), try to establish some kind of talk and maybe get some future business going. Is something like this a good idea or should I totally avoid this kinda thing?

Be friendly with dealers--it can't hurt. Just remember that if they've got business, don't interrupt it. Some dealers will blow you off because you're young--it happens. When you find a dealer who doesn't care that you are young, or that you don't have a lot of money to spend, thank them by telling other people and returning for more business when you can. My local show has a few dealers who have gotten nicer as I've aged, but there are a few guys who have always been great to me.

An example of giving kudos... if anyone ever runs into Tom Hyland, stop by. I've never seen someone so happy to place a $5 coin with a kid because the kid's eyes light up. He's friendly, he's incredibly honest, and he's just a plain nice guy.

I've had the same experience... I've built a pretty good relationship with BillJones... I don't buy very much from him, but he occasionally has something in my range... and he's a very nice guy who likes to talk coins. And there are other dealers that are very much like him. But... you will run into a couple... well... you can fill in the blank I'm sure... but dealers that I will never give business to again because of the way they've treated, but I'll keep going back to Bill. I always make it a point to stop by his table at his show and talk coins, at least for a few minutes if he isn't busy... image

Aren't we getting things backwards? I thought the dealer should be nice to the client (the collector/purchaser). It is the client that has the choice to spend his money with Dealer A or Dealer B. I'm not implying that the collector should be nasty or mean to the dealer, but if the dealer is continually putting people off (and people stop buying), then hopefully he will get the message soon. Also, even though a person might be young, his dollars are just as green as anyone else's. Just my opinion.

I have had dealers drop what they are doing to help me...I always give them my business and return for chat later in the day. I have also had dealers ignore me...I give them 5 minutes...or at least 3 times where they make direct eye contact with me...if they still ignore me, I simply leave. If they are too lazy to help me they dont need to be doing business. I have also had dealers who have shown me expensive coins and talked about the coins seriously with me. Also, some dealers have said "You cant afford that coin." when I ask to see one...At that moment, you whip out a wad of cash and rub it in their face..then walk off..mwhahahah!
