Does anyone know if there is a good book about Morgan varietys. Something with pictures that will help me to learn. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

The book by Van Allen & Mallis is the one you want.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

You could probably borrow or buy one from the ANA.

Funny you should ask, as I just spent several hours trying to attribute a 1878 8 TF that I won in a recent auction. I used the VAM book, Bowers' new guide and The Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties book. I finally determined it was a VAM 10. It took a lot of work, because the VAM book is extremely detailed, plus there are a ton of varieties for 1878.

I would say your best bet is the VAM book for its detail and closeup photographs. It's officially titled, the Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars. I would also recommend the Top 100 and Hot 50 booklets, as they are pocket sized and you can take them to shows and shops.

You can find these on eBay occassionally:

Top 100 Morgans by Michael Fey
Hot 50 Morgans by Jeff Oxman

Also, check this website for some variety photos.
