  • Looks like a 1622 German states copper coin-- on the other hand, the lack of any kind of legend is puzzling, and so is that '84'

Yes I'm finding this all puzzling myself.

The arms appear to match those of Nurnberg, but the only coins I see listed for them in the 17th century Krause are thalers and gold.

I don't have time for much sleuthing at the moment, but if nobody else solves the riddle, I'll have another crack at it later. I do love a challenge. image

That "84" on the reverse is indeed most interesting.

It's a Nurnberg "Kipper" -- a copper 1/84th Gulden listed as KM-46; before 1621, they were made of silver. I think this one was made by the mintmaster Hans Putzer, whose issues were the more common of the three that are found for 1622; this would mean it's worth (according to Krause) $8 in VG, $15 F, $25 VF, $40 XF.

...but I still don't see it in Krause. My 17th century volume is a First Edition. It starts the Nurnberg section off with a thaler.
