Best coin finds might be under my nose

I got so caught up in looking at the 1903S i might have passed upa chance at a 1853 large cent NGC MS65BN which the dealer said should be a MS66BN. but at $400 i might have to put the gold coin back and take my extra pennies that i have to cash in and go get it PCGS has it at near $600 and my coin guides go to 63 only at 350. what i could have missed

the gold coin is more common i think than a 1853 large cent in a Ms65BN or what cna be a Ms66bn

he told me if he wanted he could cross over to PCGS and may get a 66 out of the deal. and if he sits on it longer he may just do that. so you are telling me @$400 this is better than the 1903 S gold piece i figured that this large cent would be better. and at the same time gaurenteed at the grade since tis slabbed

since im new to buying coins with value ( besides luck of the change draw at riteaid) i feel like im gonna be screwed no matter what i do.
this is the same guy who has the 1903S so maybe i should go for it. if its a better coin and slabbed. and i might cross it over to pcgs at the same time i send my 1882 $5 in . sound like a plan?

I 'm sorry, but any dealer who is trying to sell me a coin, and tells me the coin should be/should have been graded higher by so and so grading service, will not have my business. JMHO.
  • I agree with ER, atarian. If you have not dealt with this dealer before, be careful. Another observation is that you seem in a big hurry to buy coins. Take your time and pick and choose. There will always be plenty of coins for sale tomorrow.

    Good luck,

  • The age old "buy the coin not the holder" comes to play here. Take a look at some 66's and 65's of this date, I'm sure Heritage has plenty in their archives for you to study. If you can upgrade it to a 66 and make all that $ off of it, great, good job. I'd just be very leary about a dealer saying "it should be a 66". Why doesn't he spend the $30 and take the chance? Because it'd probably come back as a 64 and he'd lose his shirt on that coin that's why.
  • sounds like the price is rite if bid is 645.00
and for 30 bucks,ya got nothing to lose !

ER - Remind me of that next time you try to buy a coin from me. Otherwise, I might make the mistake of telling you what I honestly think of my more conservatively graded coins and drive you away forever.

For the record, I've sold hundreds of coins over the years that I believed to be undergraded or possibly undergraded. With grading fees what they are, a limited amount of capital and volatile markets, I can't afford to resubmit every coin until I'm sure I'm not leaving money on the table.

I want the dealers input but my own opinion is what counts when I reach for my back pocket.

Too many young folks let their passion for the hobby turn it into a fire sale.

Be very picky. Ten years from now when you look back, you will know what I mean.image

    Oh- buy the cent.

    Andy,

You've got real experience with grading, though--for all we know, atarian is dealing with joe schmo who is selling a coin that was a gift in a 65 holder. But as granddad said, slow down and take your time with these--impulse purchases that eat up your funds can hurt you quite quickly.
