Recommend an obscure book, auction catalog or website...

Most of us know the standard references, mainstream periodicals and websites, and major auction catalogs. How about the more obscure ones? Let's share some info. I'll start.

For collectors of pioneer gold, fractional gold, and western frontier history, check out The Society of Private and Pioneer Numismatics' periodical "The Brasher Bulletin". Subscriptions are free with membership in the society. To join, contact Don Kagin.

For collectors of 20c patterns, see B&M 9/94 (Salisbury). 24 different examples.

Is that obscure enough for you image

    CoinFacts.com

With hundreds of thousands of visitors out of the millions of web users, that sounds obscure image

See my sigline for a great Bust forum, hosted by Byron Reed. Quite a few knowledgable peoples over there, always happy to add one more. And activity on the forum has picked up a little more recently, and we'd love for any Bust specialists to come join us, and share your coins image

And also for Bust (Silver and Gold) Collectors, there's the John Reich Collectors Society, $20 annual membership, which includes their (I think) quarterly journal... image And they now have a Sub-Society for Quarters I believe... yeah, the Bust Quarters Collectors Soceity. image I'm sending in my dues for JRCS tomorrow image

I don't know if it's obscure enough for your taste, but my website, www.coppercoins.com, takes one small part of the market as a whole, Lincoln cent die varieties, and expands on it like no other does.

For kickers, many here know about the book I wrote as well, Looking Through Lincoln Cents. Although it centers its attention more on the overall series, it still leans heavily on the study of die varieties.

I think Tom Becker's site has some quality articles for newer collectors.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Robert Hilt's "Die varieties of Early United States Coins", 1980.

Although his "group strength" theory really hasn't stood the test of time, the book is absolute required reading for fans of early US coins (1793-1803).

I came across this last year by accident. It has pop - ups but, I think it`s worth the hassle.

The Dr. Juan XII de Suros catalog, auctioned by Superior in the mid-1990s. Dr de Suros had a complete collection of U.S. overdates, including the rare 1827/3 quarter and another very rare gold piece (an 1822/1 $10, maybe?). He also had a bunch of neat variety coins seldom seen in public auction, like gem 1969-S and 1970-S doubled die obverse Lincolns.

There were some real bargains to be had at the Suros sale. The prices realized makes it look like no one showed up.

If you like half and large cents, the Superior catalog for the 1989 Jack H. Robinson sale is a great reference. You can attribute most half and large cents with this volume. A ton of photos that make it easier.

    You'll love the photos in:

Marvin, Paul and Margolis, Arnold. The Design CUD. 1979.

I'm always amazed that I've seen so few of the coins photo'd in this book.
