1860 $5 Clark-Gruber and Co.

Picked this one up from Amspacher in 1985 too. Not as high a grade as the others in the set, put a tough one to find.

Wish the obv. was as nice as the rev.

1985? Sounds like a 7-point upgrade waiting to happen...

    Is it for sale? image

  • Pulled this group out of the safety deposit box to sell, but all are raw and have to be graded first. Going to pcgs.

    Thank you,

Tough coins to grade, at least 55 and less than 65.
I wonder if pcgs has a grading set for those imageimage
  • Placid, I need to work on the quality of my photos. All I have is a real good scanner and I am new to using it. Hope I get better with practice. Two coins that are alot nicer than the photos are the toned 1885 Morgan (a real stunner) and the 23s S/L FH 25c (white as the driven snow with slight toning on rim area) Thanks for the opinions

  • Thank you RYK. Nice coin. I will be happy to get an AU50 grade on mine.

Your coin looks much better than 50. These are hard to grade, but I would expect an MS grade for your coin. Good luck and keep us posted.

  • Thank you Placid. That is encouraging. Maybe I had my sites set too low on this one.

I gotta tell you, granddad, I've really enjoyed seeing the photos of your coins.

Out of curiosity, when you were picking these up in the 80's how much were you relying on Amspacher as compared to your own involvement in what you bought? In other words, were you selecting the material, was he recommending coins to you, or somewhere in between?

If you were heavily relying on his expertise, he certainly did right by you.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • Kranky, I had some input, but mostly relied on him. I thought he was doing me right. And with the money that I was spending, rightfully so.

Thanks for all of the comments.
    Have a Great Day!

  • With Andy and Karl saying MS I would have to guess these are normally softly struck, is that right? I am not familiar with these coins. The hair at the high points of the design look worn or softly struck to me so I would have guessed AU.
