POLL: Does anybody work?

BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
Seems the volume of posting has increased in recent weeks. How much time does this forum divert from our jobs?
In my case, excuse #1 - I'm off this morning (till noon EDT). Excuse #2 - when I do post from work, it's OK, because I work for myself image

I am at work now and between cases. I could go to the doctor's lounge and listen to a few blow-hards boast about their golf game, etc. Or, I can visit the forum to listen to blow-hards boast about their coins. image Since I do not play golf, it's a no-brainer.

  • I work as a teller at a bank and between customers There is nothing to do. I'm paid to be at my window and be available if someone comes in. Since we have to look up acounts on our database I have a computer with a T-1 line at my window. I spend most of my free time looking through coins though.

I recently relocated offices at work, I am now enduring a 100 mile round trip daily commute.

I am extremely fortunate to have a reporting structure that takes a positive view on telecommuting.

I am able to work from home two days a week regularly, and occasionally more if need arises. For instance when I recently had surgery, I was telecommuting for a few weeks every day. The only requirement is that I have sufficient resources to maintain both voice and data connectivity at the same time as I quite often lead voice/video teleconferences.

I check out the boards at work when the work is slow or I'm waiting for a user to call me back.

I only go home to sleep. I don't even have a phone at home. The rest of the timeI'm at work. At the carpet shop I have one of those electronic switchboard things that let incoming calls come through so it doesn't matter if I'm on-line all day, still don't miss any calls and I can just walk away from the computer to handle any customers who come in.

At the hospital I take my laptop in with me and after I have all of the daily reports and filing done there is little to do other than read or watch TV while you wait for any patients to come in. The hospital has all of our computers networked and wired up for highspeed internet access but we have been warned not to use it except for hospital business. And the network is monitored so they can track our internet use. So I plug my laptop into one of the dozens of unused phone lines and dial in to my personal dialup account bypassing their monitoring system. (Or if I don't want to get online I work on updating my book.)

No computer at home, so I only post from work. I just hope I don't get caught.

Similar to RYK, I am in between cases and only slightly putting one off to post this message. Gotta go do an UGI.

I take alot of work home with me but it's not considered working from the home, more like homework image

M-F I'm at work at 0530, index (Go home) about 1800 or 6PM for you civilian folk types image Thats about a 12.5 hour day (Usually working right through lunch).

Say average 12 hour days, 5 days a week=72 hour weeks.

Then, there is the work that I take home to finish, or the catch up stuff on the week ends image

I'll say I average 80-100 hour weeks. Now, the problem is, while I'm at work, I don't usually do the work that I need to get done. I'm usually helping someone else, or "flexing" on something that just came up that was supposed to be done weeks ago.

The lunch time, homework and week end catch up is the work that I need to get done.

It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it image

I'm salaried. I'm paid to get a particular job done, not for the number of hours I'm working. If I get the job done and done well, that's the end of it.

My last job had (3) T1 connections, so internet access was readily available.

My most recent employer doesn't even have the browser installed on the workstations... image

Actually, I rarely use a computer at my work anymore

I'm a teacher, so... summer off means I'm not working now.
I'll post if I've got an off period (lunch) at work though.

Most of the time home, but if it's slow at work, I can post from there, as my husband and I own our own company.
