Since they use so many dies, not very good is my guess

Well I still think its worth a shot, I mean why not. I thought I heard a kid in Michigan found one, if so, thats not too far away from me, so there is hope.image

Actually the kid who found the discovery coin is from Florida...not Michigan. You are correct in that distribution of such coins tends to be a highly localized thing. Good luck!

The guy who found the second one was also in Florida. Most likely it will be a very localized release. Members in Florida should start checking their nickels. Nickel dies have an average life of around 300,000 pieces. They struck about 360 million of these from the P mint. So if this die went for an average life, you sould have a roughly 1 in 1200 chance of any randomly picked 2004-P being from that die. Of couse it may not have lasted a full run in which case your odds are evenn worse, and even if it did the doubling isn't real stong and may not be visible on late stages of the die which would worsen the odds even further.

I'd be more impressed if you find a circulated one...

I can vouch for the localized thing. One of the areas where the 1983 DDR cents turned up was north Florida. I just happened to be living in Gainesville at the time and was able to pluck eight of them out of circulation. image
