Proof set falls apart!!!!!!

I was moving around some of my "sealed" proof sets. As I started moving one from 1962 I heard the unmistakable sound of silver on silver!!!!! Thinking that I had been the subject of a fake proof set I decided to open it up. (even though I didn't really want to) I was somewhat surprised to find that it was indeed a ligit set. The plastic on all of the outer seals was intact but for some reason the seals between several of the coins had either rotted or failed for whatever reason.
I haven't taken pics yet (cuz I suck at photography) but both the Frankie and the quarter have developed absolutely beautiful golden toning. All the coins are fantastic, especially the Jeff which, under certain light, looks almost purple.
I'll try and get some photos soon but was wondering if mthis has happened to anyone else. I wish it hadn't happened but what it told me was that I now believe that at least the sets haven't been tampered with.

They can get brittle... I've seen many that are ripping at their seams...

  • I figured thats what is was but its interesting that it was only the inner seams. The outer ones were all intact.

Quite a few times, and usually the same toning you've described. These broken inner seal sets are where many of the pretty toned Jefferson proofs come from. The coins frequently smell funny for a couple days until they air out, though.

After a few more drinks, Russ may let you give him a sniff test!
It is a god awful aroma from the plastic. Phenolic screwdiver handles, ie: Craftsman clear with red or blue handles, emit an odor from absorbtion and release of the gases in the plastic like the cello wrap on the coins!

I found a few like that in a local shop. Had some pretty pinkish toning on the Franks and Roosies.

62 proof sets are known for breaking open on the inner seals, Russ is correct, the silver gets bad, but the nickels look fantastic!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • I agree. I'm not a nickel collector but I love the colour of this one.
BTW Madmarty, I'm looking forward to that proof Frankie I bought from youimage
