Beckett.com experiences???

I decided to buy a card or two from some of the storefronts on beckett.com yesterday. After two transactions, I am almost convinced that it is a complete waste of time. I figure I will give them the rest of the day to make it right, then post the details here. Anybody else got any history with them, good or bad?

  • one time on Beckett i saw an offer of 1991 Fleer baseball boxes for $129.95 plus shipping (the price was even slashed from $149.95). not sure if this relevant or not, but i found it humorous.

I ordered about 35-40 raw vintage cards from one of the dealers. My CC was charged at the point of sale and then about a week later I got an e-mail saying over half weren't in stock and that my CC would receive a credit. Not a big deal but somewhat annoying to make sure you get the credit and it's the proper amount etc. I sent an e-mail to Beckett and they apologized but said it was up to the dealer to update their inventory and that their hands were basically tied.

  • I have purchased many cards from several Beckett dealers in the past couple of years, with no problem whatsoever. On the rare occasion when something was not in stock, they sent a cash refund with the cards (only a $ or 2). Just the other day I ordered cards of every Gator in 04 Topps Football. I was able to get them all from one dealer. No way would I find a lot like that on Ebay and with no local card shop, Beckett Marketplace is the best place for me to get them.

About 2 years ago I purchased multiple cards from various dealers. I got them in a timely manner--but their prices were higher than if I had searched on eBay--I just wanted the cards to fill some holes in some player collections, and they had them ready for the taking-so i took them. I haven't even looked at the beckett stores/sellers since then. My experiences were OK.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

It really depends on the store you are dealing with. Burbank sportscards is a very good company, but their prices tend to always be (by far) the highest. I have dealt with several of them, and always been more than satisfied with the results.

  • Hi Jeff,

I've used the Beckett stores for many of my raw Nolan Ryan purchases and outside of one snafu with Burbank Sportscards, I've never had any problems. The Burbank problem was they sent 60 Ryan cards and 5 Oversized Ryans in a USPS Pouch evelope, the envelope was opened and resealed and I only received the 5 Oversized Ryan cards. Burbank never would process the insurance claim, so I was out $200+. I'll never buy from them again.

  • I have bought cards fairly regularly for several years (at least 200 hundred transactions without a problem). It's a great place to find the last few commons to complete a modern set. I'd rather pay 2x or 3x "book" for those last few cards than search ebay.

I've also bought some vintage commons to try to grade. Those results have been very mixed. Most of the dealers routinely overgrade vintage cards, but every once in a while I find a card that grades an 8. I've probably picked up 5 or 6 cards for my 61 football set (PSA 8) and a dozen or more for my 70 football set (also PSA 8). I just assume that about 1 in 10 cards described as NM or better might actually be an 8. I've also learned to avoid certain vintage dealers that outrageously overgrade (and one that ships in a plain envelope with no protection no matter the value of the card).

  • I just place my second order with them. The first went through rather well I am hoping the second transaction is a repeat.
