Auction Catalogs - Need Your Help

I'd like to obtain some more auction catalogs. I'd like to have them, especially the major sales, because of the sheer numismatic knowledge contained within (Plus them pretty pictures image) but also cause I want to do a little research. I was wondering if you peoples of the US Coin Forum can help me pick out the major sales, when they took place, and who sold them. And also, any sales that had major Bust collections contained within. I would greatly appreciate everybody's help. image

  • The problem isn't really buying or locating them, as much as it is identifying them so I know what I'm looking for........

I think that the Eliasberg and Norweb sales contained a lot of important coins and a lot of important and interesting coin information. They show up on ebay now and then. And they turn up on the BST board now and then.

  • Yeah, I've been looking through that site, and have picked out a couple catalogs that look to be what I am looking for.

I would say to get the catalogs from Heritage, American Numismatic Rarities, Superior, Goldberg, and Bowers & Merena. If you subscribe to all of them, it will be costly (each auction firm charges about $70 for a year subscription). Also, if you fax to them an invoice of coin purchases that you made with a competitor, they will send you free catalogs. That is what I did. I bought about $5,000 worth of coins from B&M, and then I sent the invoices to the other firms. They have been sending me their catalogs for free since.

  • I've already sent PreTurb a PM and have been looking at his site. But now, I need to go beyond what he has on his site to find other catalogs he doesn't have listed. image

Garrett, Norweb, Eliasberg and Bass are must buys. The Apostrophe Sales are a good mix of notable examples as well.

For a dollar specialist like myself, I then add the following:

    Fairfield
    James A Stack
    Amon Carter
    Floyd Starr
    Rudolf
    L R French

  • I have received great service from CoinKat, who is a board member here. His name is Karl Moulton and his web site is www.coincats.com. Tons of nice numismatic catalogs at very fair prices.

I also buy auction catalogs from book dealers at coin shows. My biggest score was at the EAC convention 2 years ago. A coin dealer had a table full of old auction catalogs. They were priced from $1 to $5 each. I filled up my car's trunk with auction catalogs at that show!

The better catalogs, such as Norweb, Eliasberg, Garrett, etc., must be purchased at a premium price, as they are getting harder to locate.

B&M's Logan catalog would be a great start.

Already got the Logan catalog image Got that a couple months ago from boiler. He said he usually has an extra of catalogs for sales that he goes to, because he gets one at home, then picks one up at the auction, so he was my first person to go to asking for catalogs, but he didn't come up with anything... so here I am, searching people's sites, and asking here... image

Hmm possibly... but I'm leaning towards more Half-Dimes, thinking about researching some of 1802 Half-Dimes... image Here's a list of possible catalogs I've compiled together...

Apr 16, 1997; Coin Galleries; BMS
    Oct 1-3, 2000; Superior; Pre-Long Beach
    Jan 6, 2003; Superior; Elite
    May 30, 1999; B&M; Cheaspeake
    Apr 30-01, 1965; Century Sale
    Oct 24, 1956; Stack's; Maj. Lenox R. Lohr
    Apr 27-29, 1967; Stack's; Bernard Copeland
    Jun 20-22, 1973; Stack's; June
    Apr 27-29, 1983; Stack's; Greater New York

And also, I think it was the Norweb I sale, and I think the first sale of Eliasberg's collection had the Half-Dimes, but both of these catalogs are sold at quite a premium. These other ones should be more common and less expensive to get... image

I will bury you in old auction catalogs. Wait until I see you at the next show. You better leave room in your trunk.image

    George -

Here is a short list of some older catalogs that are strong in Half Dimes:

    B+M Norweb I
    B+M Eliasberg I

    Merkin 9/20/67
    Merkin 6/12/68
    Merkin 9/18/68

    New Netherlands 6/30/70

    Superior 9/16/96 Steinberg

    Stack's:
    11/54 Dupont II
    11/57 Empire
    5/60 Neumoyer
    10/60 Holmes
    2/65 Stadiem
    4/69 Miles II
    2/72 Turrini
    11/72 Delp
    10/73 Scanlon
    2/78 Goshen
    3/78 Fraser
    3/80 Detroit
    2/82 Robison
    12/82 Robison III

    Question now for you:

What research are you looking to do? What do you want to learn from these catalogs?

Newer catalogs have better photos and variety identification. Older catalogs (such as what I listed here) generally have better pedigree info but poorer photos and variety identification.

The Logan/McCloskey text (1998) is a must if you don't already have it.

Also, if you're not already a member, join JRCS and collect as many older Journals as you can - they are filled with fascinating and candid information seldom found elsewhere.

Ebay is a decent source for all these items, although you may have to wait a while for something to come up.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you much PreTurb! image I'm considering a few different things, but I'm thinking about researching 1802 Half-Dimes, as there are very few known. So, I'd like to see how many of the 1802s I can track that are XF+ in the auction catalogs. So, the older catalogs will help with that and the pedigrees for the coins... image

Regarding the 1802, the Logan/McCloskey book contains a 20-page analysis of auction appearances from the 1800's through 1998. This would certainly give you a head start.
  • I forgot about that... thanks PreTurb! image
