Do you ever spend modern proof coins?

When you tear apart a proof set, do you ever spend the left overs? I had some Panama proofs from a set and just fed them into the vending machine at work! I also love to put them into the tip jar at Starbucks..
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

There have been a lot of these in circulation. Back in the '80's some sets got down
to only about double face value. The premium for the sets could usually be made up
with the half and cent leaving the other coins hard to sell. They were especially diff-
icult if they had any sort of problems so many of these went into circulation. Over the
years I've seen many proofs in pocket change including a '68 quarter worn down to VG.
I've spent some mint set coins but very few from proof sets.

I usually stick'em in tubes and give them to my local dealer for face. He sells them near face for the album guys.

No, but not that long ago I found a proof bicentennial quarter in a roll of circulated quarters I got from the bank.

If I break a proof set up for grading I always put the rest back into circulation. Many times they go in rolls that I turn in to the bank. I always wonder what people think when they get such a shiny coin in change! I also use 2004 Kennedy halves to pay my tolls on the turnpike!

No, but I received a 69-s dime in change once about 15 years ago. Only time I've come across a proof in change.

Now watch, this week I'll recieve 2 or 3 in change or found in rolls...

  • I have spent proof coins many times. Normally when I was so broke I had to. image
  • I give them to my kids or spend them if they're nothing special. A little OT but I had given my kids some SBAs the other day and the lady at the gas station refused them. She told my kids they were no longer good as money, and were good just for collectors. My wife didn't want to argue so took them back, but what an idiot.
