    That does look very neat.

Y'know, just tonight I was goin' through my detector finds album and remembered I have a 1914 Canadian large cent, that I dug in a park here. When I found it, it was encased like that. Unfortunately, the aluminum outer ring (or whatever it was encased in) was totally corroded and crumbled away. It wasn't ever readable, though after much cleaning, the coin came out OK. I suspect it was a "lucky" encasement. Too bad the shell part (or whatever you call that outside ring) was corroded away. It looked like zinc, actually.

Cam40, if you are referring to his icon, that's a "bingle" from Alaska, and a nice one, too. They are listed in the back of the Redbook, now.

Man! I just noticed that was an "S" mint cent in that auction! Way cool! Even if it doesn't have a VDB on the reverse. image

those "Good Luck" tokens are really interesting to me. The August 2004 issue of "Numismatist" mentions the colleting of these tokens in it's "Internet Connection" article. www.encasedcollectorsinternational.org is highlighted by the article.

I scanned the site breifly. A whole lot of information, and an interesting collecting specialty!!

  • I have a 1904 IHC encased in a 1904 St. Louis Worlds Fair good luck encasement. Have had it for years, dont even remember where I got it.

  • I wonder what the most valuable coin ever found in encased was. I imagine there is a 1909S VDB out there, too.

  • How hard is it to extract a coin from one of those lucky cases?

They have to come out in better shape than the coins made into jewelry.

    Shylock,

How much did that cost you and how much did you sell it for?

LordM - here's the other side, not quite as clean as the reverse. Looks like a 63RD IH if it were gradeable.

Shamika - it sold for $320..

Now that's weird. Why the dustpan, I wonder? It's like they swept the coin up off the floor! image

I've seen some strange symbols on those old lucky tokens: wishbones, swastikas, horseshoes, clovers, elephants, rabbit's feet, and so on... but that's the first dustpan!

Here's one I dug, with quite an array of symbols on it:

They aren't too hard to get out but they are severely damaged.

Yes there are people who collect them, I've considered doing it but haven't started yet.
