Just got this response from ebay seller...

On June 8th I purchased a PCGS AU58 1923-S Buffalo nickel. The seller was very prompt and friendly with his responses. After 2 weeks I attempted to contact him as I had not received the coin. After repeated attempts I finally got a response today. He said that he had recently moved and his computer didn't make it in one piece. He hadn't shipped the item because he didn't have my shipping info. He was very sorry for the delay and offered to refund my paypal payment or ship the item on Friday.

What would you do in my situation?

Be extremely grateful he wrote me with a reason as to his tardiness and await my coin. If he ships on Friday, I'd suspect I would receive it from the Post Office by Monday or Tuesday afternoon without incident.

  • Ask him to please ship it Delivery Confirmation ASAP and forward tracking info to you.
  • His computer not "making it" in one piece has nothing to do with his having your shipping information, which is stored online at Ebay.

Well, if I still wanted the coin and his feedback doesn't make you suspect a scammer, I'd take him at his word and ask him to ship. He's clearly responded, albeit late, and offered a refund. I would ask for a delivery confirmation number as soon as he ships, and within a day or two see if that number corresponds to a shipment sent on that day from that ZIP code.

I'd be interested to know why he needed to wait until Friday, though. I know it can be a hassle for some people to get to the P.O. and I don't always manage to ship on the next business day (though I try) -- but if I were THIS late in shipping an item I would be going out of my way to make it right for the buyer, and if that means the hassle of an extra trip, that's a reminder to me to be more "on the ball" next time.

I'm inclined to give the guy the benefit of the doubt. However, I've heard this crap before and got burned.
But, if he's being honest, I would definitely lose some sleep, being a seller myself.

There's no tracking info with DC... half the time, it doesn't even show that it was received until it shows it was delivered...

  • I would thank him very much for his reply and tell him to ship the coin. I wouldn't ask for any special mailing. Just wait til Tuesday and hope it shows up. If it doesn't, then you are no worst off then you are today. Then you need to start fighting with him and Ebay.

Just a little after thought. If the computer didn't make it in one piece, then image what is the coin going to look like. image

He could have gone to his local library and used their computer to access his eBay account...or to contact you and explain the situation. He didn't. I hope you get either your coin or your money.

  • If I really wanted the coin I would have him go ahead and mail it with confermation numbers.

There's only one time I regret not just taking the money back, but it wasn't for a coin purchase.

    Good Luck!

Give the seller a bit more time. I know that the broken computer excuse is a bit lame, but if he really moved, he is under alot of stress and his schedule must be crazy. I would ask him to ship immediately (the least he could do) so that you still have time to receive the coin before 30 days elapse. The 30 day window is important if you paid by Paypal and want to file a claim with them.
