The 1st PSA 9 Bobby Orr ROOKIE....................

No, it didn't happen yet.

However, with the GAI 9.5 that is in the mastro auction,
my curiosity arose after a recent discussion on this board
about the potential price that would be realized on a PSA 9
Orr rookie.

My guess on the recent thread was 50,000.00 easily.
Well, I was wrong.

For those of you that don't know me, I have sold hundreds of PSA
Orr cards on ebay, and many other high ticket items privately
to some of the biggest Orr spenders in the hobby.

Many years ago, when Patrick Roy was a rookie, a friend of
mine brought a beautiful Orr rookie to show Patrick in the Boston
Garden locker room. Roy liked it, but only offered his mask for the
card. The card was going for about 3,000 at that time and wasn't
a good trade.

So I decided to run this conversation about the final price
of the first Bobby Orr PSA 9 rookie (if it ever surfaced),
to these big spenders on the phone yesterday. No, I didn't speak to Patrick.

I asked these guys who sometimes pay 10-25x SMR
for cards what they thought the first PSA 9 Orr rookie would go for.

I did not receive an answer that was under 100,000.00

I remember the first Roberto Clemente PSA 10 going for
slightly over this amount, and the Orr rookie will sell
for that amount to these private buyers if it ever surfaces.

As I suspected none of these guys however have any interest in the GAI 9.5
card in the mastro auction.

  • Marc,

i think the market would be artificially inflated for a PSA 9 Orr rookie. i'm not sure how many ultra wealthy Orr collectors there are out there, but i think you mentioned two? (Oysh and someone else). i'm talking about guys that could afford to throw down $100k on a card. the first PSA 9 would bring a huge amount, because a bidding war would ensue. but if another one ever surfaced, i doubt it would bring over $20k. i doubt there are enough hockey collectors willing to spend five figures on one card.

My guess is the gai 9.5 will go for more than most expect. My guess is in the 50 K range. I would be surprised if a nicer one is ever found than that one. There just is not much unopened puck out there, especially from this year.....I think this card will go for what a psa 9 would bring....When does said auction go down anyway.....
