Dealers - Post a strange request from a collector

I know all you dealers have some stories to tell. Please post one of the strange requests from a collector on the bourse floor.
.
The last show I did I was asked for a gold princess. What would you think the person meant? They didn't mean a gold piece! They wanted to look at Sacagawea dollars!
Thanksgiving National Battlefield Coin Show is November 29-30, 2024 at the Eisenhower Allstar Sportsplex, Gettysburg, PA. Tables are available. WWW.AmericasCoinShows.com

I would have figured they wanted to see HLM.

I was working with PTVETTER when a customer insisted on getting a discount on an AU bust half because it had hairlines in the field. Pat explained that the coin was AU, and that meant it had experienced wear and handling. The customer just kept repeating that he liked the coin, but it had hairlines and therefore he should get a discount.

Oh, and I've seen plenty of people who ask for "mint sets" but mean proof sets.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • There's a guy who comes to a lot of the same shows that I attend. Each and every time he walks up to my table and asks the same question: "Do you have any holed colonial coins?" I have never sold him a single coin, simply because my colonial coins are without holes. Last year James and I were at a show that was slow in terms of selling. I said in jest that we should drill holes in our colonials so that we could sell him some coins. I am sure that some of you dealers know who the "holed colonial" collector is. (no, it's not LordMarcovan.....another guy). Nice guy, just a wierd request.

Way too many to list here! Some of them are pretty funny actually. This isn't from on the bourse but in a PM,

""However, if you have (or can get) me a really nice PCGS AU-58 which appears to be a near-miss MS-63 --that's what I'd like to get as a starter coin."""

    Tom,

That isn't so funny, there are a LOT of members here that feel the same way......
Of all the Morgans I am selling here the AU's were the hottest sellers....wonder why?image

Hey, I look for this all the time. But I'd also expect to pay at least MS-60 money for this coin most of the time, unless it's an extreme condition rarity that's not uncommon in AU and very scarce in mint state.

If someone is looking to pay AU money for such a coin, THEN it's a funny request! image

Has a buyer ever just come out and said "Sell me an AU coin that I can flip as MS".

I don't get odd requests, I make them although the dealers are getting used to them by now. "Do you have any Conder tokens, French or german notgeld coins, odd or unusual slabs, sample slabs, or body bags?"

I am not a dealer, but at the NY Invitational Coin show, I overheard a customer asking a dealer if he had a San Francisco quarter eagle with "a nice big "S". The dealer looked a little puzzled and the customer again repeated that he liked a nice big S on his coin. The dealer explained that the coin is very small to begin with, and the S really cannot get much bigger. It was funnier in person hearing the exchange back and forth.

Then how about a 1916-D dime with a huge D? I hear there may be some in Brookfield, Ohio... image
