Is the qualifier the kiss of death?

I know most won't go after qualified cards for their registered sets, but I can't believe some of the raw set collectors out there don't pick up these deals.

Check this one out - 1960 Topps #478 Frank Torre PSA 9

Yeah, the seller is an ass for not listing it as "OC", but does the card look that bad? I don't think so. I have a friend that collects this set raw in EX+ condition. I wish I had seen the auction earlier. I would have bought it for him.

I just noticed the auction had a reserve. Never mind, it looks like a couple of bidders were looking for a nice card to add to a raw set.

I'm still surprised that it didn't get more bids - maybe the reserve scared some bidders. This seller is even more of an ass now!

I saw that one too and I agree with you that it would be a great card for even a NM set. But it's not too often that you see a 9 (OC) card. 8 (OC) cards seem to be common but such cards wouldn't do me any good.
  • That is a nice looking OC - it might be a NQ 8. He should have just listed it at what he wanted - probably too much though.

I've always thought that an off center card that was "oc" top to bottom is much more pleasing then an "oc" thats left to right.
Either way, most see an "oc" listed on the flip, and they don't persue it.
Here's a nice top to bottom "oc" card that presents very well...jay

I agree that a card has much more eye appeal if it's off center top to bottom (within reason) vs. left to right. This Marchetti was graded 9 (OC) - and I've been debating whether I should crack and resubmit. This is definately a 8 NQ or possibly a 9 NQ. I feel the grading was a little rough....

The Torre is a nice card - it would probably have a shot at a 10 if it wasn't off centered.

Jay -- That is a rare exception. The card has a slight tilt and is only "OC" for about half an inch on the right side.

This is the reason the OC qualifier has to go. Let the buyer decide for himself if the card is too off centered for their collection. I have seen many 8 and 9 OC's that I would have purchased had it not been designated as such.

Get rid of the OC qualifier? I'm hoping that you mean to bump a 9OC to a 7, or an 8OC to a 6 and the like. One of the reasons PSA was able to start a successful business is that I can buy a PSA 9 sight unseen and know exactly what I'm getting.

I have no problem with 9oc (as long as it's not too hideous) if my target grade for the registry is 7. Some truly beautiful vintage cards can be a 9oc holder. I also look at 9oc's of my "want list" cards to see if they are just barely outside the centering guidelines and might get an unqualified 8 if resubmitted.
