wanna see a BEAT UP penny?

What the heck happened to this penny? I found it in one of the coin sets I am working through. What can corrode copper like this? Was it REALLY badly cleaned? I do know this coin has been in storage for at least 30 years. See how the reeded edge is not on the edge anymore? And what is up with the small "6" above the date?

This is one thrashed penny.

Run over by a car? Hit with a hammer? Acid tested?

  • It looks like a dug up, cleaned coin that someone had beat with a couple of rocks at one time or another.
Putting some color into it. I can imagine some miner using it to wedge into a mine support to keep the shaft from collapsing long enough
for everyone to get out. So maybe you have a "saved the day" type of hero coin there.
Or maybe there was a small hole in a ship's hull at sea in a battle during the Spanish American War or WW1,
and a sailor hammered the coin into the hole to slow the leak and helped to save the day.
Of course it probably was more ignominous and simply fell on the ground in some old western town and got buried by all the horses and wagons
running over it. Then someone found it later and kept it as a keepsake.

  • Errg. Not eye appeal.

    Pah. Y'all call THAT ugly?

Feast your eyes on some Dug Uglies. Only but two of many, many more in my detector find album!

The one on the left is an eighteen-sixty-something (bronze). 1865, I think. I found it in an old sand road which dates back to colonial times. There was a Civil War button and bullet in the road not far from where I got it. The one on the right is from a sidewalk strip here in town. I don't think yours was dug. It might have been smacked around a little, but it ain't Big League ugly. image

While I've found some pretties in the ground too, a lot of the finds in my detector album aren't photogenic enough to post here!

  • That is the part that gets me. This coin is not worn much at all. It is just beat up like crazy. The diamond pattern is still visible on the headband. You can still read the LIBERTY. The details (on the small parts that are now whupped on) are sharp. This coin is not worn, it is just.... blasted.

Someone found it in the street after it was beat up, and then put it away for a long time.
