1897-S "Far right" mintmark Barber Quarter

VeepVeep Posts: 1,423 ✭✭✭✭
I saw this coin for the first time yesterday. Boy, they're not kidding that the mintmark is far right. Breen mentions it, but provides no info. Do any Barber collectors know how common this coin is or the story behind how the mintmark got so out of place?

Thanks--

i can help you with positioning. The problem with 25c pieces was that were wasn't enough room under the tail for the mintmark. Because of that the mintmark (on many occasions) was placed far to the right.

David Lawrence mentions it in his book, but does not provide a photo. I recall reading an article in the BCCS (Barber Coin Collector's Society) on the far right position of the S, but will have to go research it to see how common it is.

I was once offered a XF 1897-S with the centered mintmark, but passed on the coin. I later voluntarily submitted myself to a psychiatric ward for a one week evaluation to determine what exactly was wrong with me. image
