topps series issue

Just wondering, does anyone know when (dates) the 1973 and prior baseball cards were issued.
For example I can remember the 1st series in the early '70's being issued in early March, but what about the late series. How many weeks for each series and so forth.
Additionally, why are some high number series more difficult (and more expensive than others).
Thanks

In the USA all men are created equal but some are more equal than others....

That's a great question and I would imagine that Topps may have in their archives an 'official' answer. But there is also possibly a 'practical' real world answer on a local personal level. If Store A still has some series 1 on hand, they may hold off on purchasing and miss a series. They were selling gum not cards and could care less about the consumer getting all the series - this is just a guess. And if they didn't think they could sell, they would abstain from the late series and opt for football instead. This was a penny business back then and I doubt if a candystore owner cared about series, collectors etc.; just sell some gum.
Time to go back to the books and look this stuff up.

As far as some hi series being harder to get at least part of the reason is that Topps would gear up for other issues (football primarily) later in the year and cut back on the production runs of their later series baseball cards. Then there was also less interest in baseball by the kids who collected by the time fall & football rolled around so less were purchased and put into the hobby stream. There are other people on the boards who can probably give you more detail on this subject.

Now collecting:

1957 Topps BB Ex+-NM
All Yaz Items 7+
Various Red Sox
Did I leave anything out?
Quite simply put, Topps produced the high series cards in far fewer quantities than the earlier series.
