Sounds like you didn't enjoy yourself at the National. Thanks for your opinion however.

    sflayank,

i`ve seen some of the things your into, and those type of items are tough anywhere, anytime, anyshow !

i went looking for just 3 items, regional food (68 kahns) and 2 topps test issues (70 candy lid + 73 comics) of johnny bench.

honestly, i was thrilled to come away with just one (70-candy lid) that was all i bought. drove home a happy man.

i feel your pain, i`ve looked for years for these and other items. the upside is, man when you do find one, your giddy as a child.

i wish you luck my friend, better hunting next time.

    your friend, lee

ps. for those of you who did`nt think i`d post a pic of my find ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, WRONG !!!

I like how the picture in the top right shows the 'batsman' wearing shin guards. Is that a hijacked cricket icon?
  • phreakdancer,

i swear i never noticed that, wild.

these were manufactured in italy, are`nt they like big baseball fans, you`d think they would know better.

  • hi
actually i had a great time at the national
    always do
its just that every year there are less and less things of interest to buy for myself
i did pickup a mantle mini bobbin head and 3 black armour coins
and i was able to buy and flip a large stack of 52s for a nice profit
just have to get rid of the dealers who are there to show their stuff and hope some moron pays triple what its worth
To prove my point i always try to make some dealer look like an idiot so i look at a card he has that i brought with me
with an smr of 200 I ask how much his his and he tells me $500 then i take mine outt and ask how much hell pay and of course he says hes not buying even at 150

    Speeder,
Do you know if PSA grades those Sportcaster cards? Anyone? I have a few to send in if they do.

Me like that tactic. I love it when a dealer uses the overhead cost excuse to lowball. Hey, I'm a "dealer" too as I advertise on Ebay. Or when you have to send the card to the dealer before you receive payment when you're selling, but need to send payment before you receive the card when you're buying.

There are certainly fair and pleasant dealers in this hobby/industry, but the ones with the same rhetoric seem to stick out.

    hey footballcrazy,

to date none have graded by psa, but that does not mean they don`t.

maybe no one has sent any in to be graded.

Those Sportscasters are fairly large, they wouldn't fit in a Disc slab I don't think. Possibly a T3 holder would fit right although they're smaller than that I believe. I have 2 Benches and a bunch from other sports.

  • I saw a few dealers other than me with regionals, and some with the majority of their display of items other than Topps and Bowman's. I did not have much offered to me to buy from patrons. I saw Kit Young buying at his table, and heard about the ball throwing at Mr. Mint. I had one guy offer me three binders of vgex to ex cards and I did not buy, I wanted more regionals or higher grades. Someone eles offered me cards above SMR. Another offered me "Pack Fresh" his words T202's in PSA 2 and 4mc holders for nice solid PSA 5 prices. I did buy a Jordan rc PSA 9, Pete Rose rc PSA 7 and Julius Erving rc from one patron.

On Saturday, someone came in with a bag of star cards from the 50's. They were from ex to nrmt. He told me that he was looking for offers, and that he did not need to sell them, and only woud if he got his price. I made an offer of $1000.00 on one card and he told me that he would not sell it for that price. I asked what price he was looking to get and he said that he would not tell me. I did not know how to play that game. He came back later and want to know if I wanted him to send me photo copies of the cards that he had at home, knowing that I would only be able to see what the cards were and not the actual condition. It is not just dealers that are difficult.

From other dealers, I bought 64 1952 high numbers, a complete 1960 Venezuelan set with no back damage and a 1957 Topps set.

Sunday I had a 1954 Dan-Dee Mantle offered to me and we went to GAI for a pregrade to determine the price. I paid his full asking price $400 more than his highest offer for this card that I will get back in a 7 holder.

I remember Zindlers had one a few months ago. Quite the rare item for a limited audience, are you planning to sell? If so, complete or in singles?

  • At this time, I would like to sell it complete. I had the six key cards graded by GAI, 5 were 4 and one 4.5. These are nice grades for this issue.

Can you shoot me an e-mail about that? Might be interested. marc.schoenen@ge.com
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Hmm, I was able to find some pretty tough football oddballs, and slabbed cards for less than eBay prices were out there if you dug.

On the Sportscasters - I've never collected them, but IIRC aren't there several language variations? As mentioned, the company that issued them was Italian, and they sold them throughout Europe and the Americas. I remember reading that they tailored the cards to the local language.

No such details will spoil my plans...
  • Hey Marty,

Do you still have any of those '61 Peters left? There's a chance I can financially recover soon from the beating you gave me when I bought the last group-- my kid's teeth can stay crooked another year, we'll learn to develop a taste for Ramen, and we'll step up our search for returnable bottles campaign.

Please PM me as to what you have left- both full panels and individual cards.
    Thx. Todd image

Joe , I actually got these as freebies, some company wanting to sell me a subscription for all the cards at so many $ per month. The set basically catalogued all sports worldwide (hence the cricket icon for base ball I believe). It was early 80's if I recall correctly.
