Ebay-Unsearched Lots-Good or Bad

F117ASRF117ASR Posts: 1,416 ✭✭✭
I always see those "Unsearched Lots" advertised on ebay with bonuses such as gold. I finally gave in to one that was $10. It was specifically a wheat lot. Well, as I expected most of the wheats were 40's and 50's. This seller, however, gave me a 1922-d and an 09 vdb as a bonus (along with some proofs/unc modern cents, a 67 kennedy, and a 2000-s proof dime). So I guess I got my moneys worth, but as of right now I see none that seem honest to me. Has anyone ever had any good or bad experiences with these kinds of things? Tell me your story.

Almost all have been picked through for the best stuff. However, there will be potentially lots of varieties. Thing is, most varieties have no real additional value.
  • I've had mostly good experiences buy lots on e-bay, I really check the sellers feedback well, ask any questions I feel are important before I bid.
I've returned some when I didn't feel they were what they said they were, no problems there either.
There are just one or two I'd say I wont buy from again.

You guys are way too skeptical, just take a look at these:

UNSEARCHED SILVER MERCURY DIMES WITH 42/41 JUST FOUND
WHEAT PENNIES CENTS W/ 1909 VDB AND 55 DOUBLE DIE FOUND
HUGE UNSEARCHED INDIAN HOARD 1877 JUST FOUND!
In the last few weeks we have had 5 1909-S VDB's, 3 1914-D's, a 1931-S, 2 1955 Double Dies, and a 1922 plain found and reported back in our feedbacks!!

I could go on, but with opportunities like these I already know where I'll be spending my money. You guys are lucky I'm even telling you about them.

I've purchased a couple from 2 different sellers and had the same results as yourself on the first lot - mostly newer wheaties with misc. stuff thrown in. The 2nd lot I bought was all silver, with like 4 liberty halves in it. I was more than satisfied with both as I am not much of a high end coin collector. Most of my coins are circulated stuff I find during my job. Not to be a jerk; but you usually get what you pay for and if you're looking for something of great value you're not gonna find it in these "unsearched lots". Just my 2 cents.

As should be expected! The majority minted were from the 40's and 50's.

Most are picked over, but alot of these seller are very savy now and will sprinkle in a few common varieties to give the illusion of the lot being unsearched, every now and then they will sprinkle a moderate to heavy variety in VG or lower to give that appearance as well, but in the end, the kick butt on shipping and also break out ahead. Its a commonplace tactic now. This way, the buyers always think they have a chance, kind of like the lottery.

Well, thanx guys. I don't think I will bother with them anymore. I'll take it as a new lesson and stick to what I know I'll be getting.

They sell dreams, and the dream crashes when you look through the coins.

couple of years ago, i actually did 1 just as a test. after all was said & done, i ended up paying a little over full retail. i didn't get ripped off, but it wasn't anything to be excited about.

most forum members will flail on & on about how these are total scams, w/out ever having actually tried it out though.
