1900 Morgan I would like grading feedback

My understanding is that the 1900 Morgan had a problem with the die and never gave a strong strike. I was wondering about this particular 1900. Since it has very clear breast feathers.

If I was ANACS, I'd grade it UNC Details, Net AU55, Cleaned, Scratched

I can't really comment on the opinions that it has been cleaned- I know a lot of 1900ish morgans have this sort of subdued luster look- I would say the scratch, small hits on the cheek, and that dig left of the eagle would drop it down to an ms-60. The subdued luster and lack of "wow" eye appeal keep it at an ms60.....

61 detaisl, interesting planchet roll in at the neck. I'll reserve judgment on cleaning.

Please explain planchet roll, I have no idea what that is.

I would venture au50. The strike is decent. There is a fair size chuck taken out of the eagle's left wing but it looks like he may of won the fight.

Thank you everyone for your opinions. Interesting on such a wide range.

I do need help on the cleaning issue. What exactly is everyone looking at??
So far I will take Cam 40's opinion. image

    Now that is fasinating.

Is that because of the marks or do you think this was cleaned and therefor downgraded?

I can't see any signs of a cleaning, but the scratch to the left of the eagle's wing sticks out like a sore thumb. The mark to the left of Liberty's nose also is a distraction.

The coin shows no signs of wear whatsoever, look at the high points, not so much as a rub.

I don't think the coin will holder at PCGS or NGC due to the reverse scratch. I have to agree with Relayer, ANACS will holder it MS details, net AU 55.

    Sorry I couldn't agree with CAM 40.

Boy do I need to brush up on my grading. I have actually put this coin up for sale on Ebay. However, I do regret that now. I would of loved to have kept it and mailed it to Anacs. I just find it hard to believe that the marks would take this from a ? maybe ms67 to a Au 50.
Oh Well, as I say live and learn.

    Still Learning.

  • MS-60/61/62 Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) - No wear. Numerous marks that probably cover the entire surface of the coin. Negative to neutral eye appeal.

MS-63 Choice Brilliant Uncirculated (Choice BU) - Numerous marks in main focal areas. Neutral eye appeal.

MS-64 Very Choice Brilliant Uncirculated (Very Choice BU) - A few marks in main focal areas. No below average strikes. Neutral eye appeal.

MS-65 Gem Brilliant Uncirculated (Gem BU) - Minor marks in main focal areas. Well struck. No below average luster. Average eye appeal.

MS-66 Choice Gem Brilliant Uncirculated (Choice Gem BU) - Very minor marks in main focal areas. Well struck. Above average luster. Above average eye appeal.

MS-67/68/69 Superb Gem Brilliant Uncirculated (Superb Gem BU) - Only light abrasions. Well struck. Outstanding luster. Superb eye appeal.

MS-70 Perfect Uncirculated (PU) - No defects of any kind visible with 5x glass. Razor sharp strike. Vibrant luster. Spectacular eye appeal.

Based on the above, (even if the coin were not previously dipped or cleaned) there is no way the coin pictured could possibly grade higher than MS-64. The luster and eye appeal eliminate grades higher than MS-64 for this coin.
  • Ok, here's my bet----------
I think this will fetch $42 as a MS 63.
Let's see what happens, we have 6 1/2 days left.

    Very Interesting.

Looks like a nice undipped MS63 to me. Is that dirt or a mark on the neck?

    1) Good strike (I look at the hair above the ear and the feathers on the turkey).
    2) It doesn't look cleaned.
    3) I don't see any wear.
    4) The hits aren't that bad.

    MS63

(dorkkarl, where do you see wear?)

A planchet roll in is where some organic material (or other) got onto the metal sheet being rolled into proper thickness. It becomes part of the planchet and thus the coin. It's considered a negative. Now that smear may not be but it looks like one. I'd have to see it in real life.
