1897 high tide penny

Can a forum member post a picture or a link to a picture of the 1897 high tide/high horizon penny? I can't seem to find a photo for comparison purposes. if someone has a good description of the two varieties, it would help also.

It is a low tide. The "P" pointing is uncertain from the picture, but the shield base on a higher tide is almost in contact with the border teeth. The shield on this coin is not, and matches the picture I have for a common low tide.

  • 'Amanda' says:
"How is it low tide when the sea is over the rocks and at crease of Britannias Robes? I'm interested. See Spink - it is shown as high tide".

She's seems to be of very brusque opinion on that as well. Of course.

Spink's pictures do seem to show that the 1897 High Tide and the 1902 Low Tide varieties are virtually identical in the sea level aspect.
The 1897 LT is really low and the 1902 HT is really high compared to their counterparts.

Those pictures in Spink refer to the rare "no tide" versus the normal low tide of the 1895 penny.

The thing is that the pennies dated 1895-1901, with the exception of the "high tide" 1897 and the "no sea" 1895 are all the same "low tide" as the 1902 LT. The reason some 1902 pennies are low tide is that there were still some Victorian reverse dies being used. This was true on 1902 LT halfpennies and 1903 farthings as well.

So the 1897 "low tide" is the same tide as all the other dates in the series.
