State quarter dies...when do they come available?

Has anyone noticed how long it takes for the mint to offer the dies for the state quarters after a particular state comes out. I absolutely love the Texas quarter and was thinking of getting a die and coin set for the shop to show the youngins that come in how a coin is actually struck...but then I was thinking why pull the trigger now, if I can get a die of a coin that I really like...the Texas one.

I went to the site and they just have the 2003 quarters and before up...and was wondering when they will put the 2004 dies up...will they wait until all of the coins for 2004 are out, or what? And if so, how long into 2005 until they may offer them...by then it will just be too long.

thanks in advance for any info

As they are ground down flat, they aren't that exciting.

I sold my 1999 NY 25c die on eBay for about 1/2 of what I paid for it, so you might want to wait and buy it there.

  • I'd like to own a die, that'd be cool, or a part of a sheet of metal that has the blanks cut out of it.

A die is nothing more than a hunk of metal with one end the size of a quarter and the other end stamped with a serial number. A waste of money, IMO

I understand they grind the whole design off the die. As relayer posted, the sets have sold for 1/2 the issue price on eBay. However, there hasn't been many sold lately.

  • Hi Morris,

They usually come out during the last quarter of the year. They rarely sell out, so there is usually no big rush. I collect them and I'm saving up for this year's order. Every now and then you get one that is not 100% defaced. I've found 2 of these so far. I'm surprised the modern quarter collectors don't jump on these. It's a gamble but the dies with under 20k strikes before retirement have some awesome quarters enclosed in the set.

Thanks for all the replies...I really want to see the design...particularly so people coming into the store can visualize how coins are mad...and with a defaced die, that may not happen.

What I don't understand, maybe someone can clear it up...if they are defaced or grinded down if you will, how in the world do you know it is the state they say it is?

They come with a COA, explaining why it was retired and the number of strikes. Mine only lasted 10

They're not cool dies with the X like in the old days (some dies on display at the Carson City Mint)

Why don't you get one of the 1996 Olympic Dies? Those are the only recent dies that have the design on them - they only have an X milled in the face for obvious reasons. I have purchased several of these dies and then bought one of the proofs struck from the die in 69dcam. Most people who see the die and the coin are interested.

Unfortunately, these dies do not come up often for sale. I have been trying to find several of the dies for over a year now.
