1980 Vending or Wax?

I'm thinking about starting a 1980 Topps Baseball set and was wondering were the better of the two places to find mint cards is. Would I be better off looking in vending boxes or wax boxes. Just looking for some opinions from past experiences?

    With older sets I always say vending because of the potential wax stains. However, with 1980 Topps you can also try Super Cello packs as well. The gum was packed separately from the cards so there should be no staining with these as well. image

    Ahem...Truthfully you might just want to keep in touch with a few people who will be submitting a large quantity of cards.1980 has its issues but if you allow someone else to do the submitting you will save yourself a lot of excess wax that is worthless to grade whcih is the majority of any box or pack you will bust open.

    I have about 15000 of vending and I'll estimate very much less than 1/3 of it is worthless in nm or less.If you want to start the set there is nothing wrong with acquiring 8s to get an eveyball on the worst but most acceptable cards to build the set with.

    Rob, I was thinking of putting the set together over time with my own submissions. I enjoy opening some old stuff but don't want to pay the high dollar for the older 70's cards. It seems right now 1980 is still in a nice price range. In the past I have opened some vending boxes only to find that most of the corners are soft. Although I opened some vending, I never really opened any wax boxes and was wondering if they had better quality cards in them.

    the problem i've had with the 80 and 81 sets in wax AND vending is the bottom edges seem to chip badly. when viewed with the naked eye they look great, but when you get the 10x on them, you can really see the chipping (or at least this is my experience). i've had some 9's and 8's, but never any 10's. however, i'm sending a bulk submission after the august special is announced and i'm including some 80's in this.

    ID what is the August special going to be? Also was thinking about picking up a few Rack Packs just to see what kind of quality they might have. I have heard that this is the way to go for the best quality except that they can be searched real easy.

    no idea what the special will be. i've done ok with rack packs. i pulled a henderson from ball34buster on ebay. it graded an 8.

    yep.. its almost like the white border is "painted" over the brown-colored cardboard, and the tiny "paint" flakes come off kinda easy..
