Well they provide protection similar to slabs at a much lower cost. If you would like all of your coins in holders but you have common dates that aren't really worth the fees to have slabbed they can be a very practical compromise. (Just please don't put some pseudo grading service label in them. Please!)
They are also nice if you want to keep all of your coins or a particular series together and some are certified. You can put them all into a PCGS box, an American Eagle binder, etc. Keeps the continuity if the coin isn't worth sending in or has been BB'd.
I've started using them recently for some of my collections where some coins are slabbed and some aren't. It makes for a nicer presentation when it's more consistent, I think. The main downside to these things is that some losers invent their own "grading services" with them and overgrade their coins.
