This was my big score from the New York show today... pictures are totally accurate (if anything, the reverse color is a little less intense than in real life... I'll work on that)... NGC MS66
Obverse... I know, what's the big deal?
...HERE'S THE BIG DEAL!!! Super Lustre, unbelieveable color!
I was going to have the reverse holdered out, but the guys at NGC were taking a break and wouldn't be able to have it done before I left for my train back home... so it's still slabbed baldy-up I'll probably reholder it sometime soon

Pretty blue mint set toning. Maybe you can get it reversed holdered at ANA show next month.
Cool

Won't be at the show If I were going back to NY tomorrow as planned, they'd be holding it now... I'll probably send it in with a submission... as it is, that'll cost $6 less
NOTE: No trees were killed in the sending of this message. However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.
Type collector since 1981

It's just personal preference. The obverse goes in the front, the reverse in back. If you're a dealer with stuff displayed in a case, then it might make sense to have the big eye-appeal side facing up along with the slab label...I guess
Otherwise, for a collector, who can simply turn the slab around to see the reverse,"reversing the polarity of slab" does nothing but create oddities in a collection of otherwise consistently oriented slabs. Since I'm anal-retentive with perfectionistic tendencies, it bugs the hell out of me to have my entire set of Washingtons on display, say, all slabbed one way except for the odd sore thumb (actually, two in my collection) that is backward because some bozo thought the eagle looked slightly more attractively blue toned than George's head...
ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry...just venting a little frustration!
I do see some hits on Frankies face and the bell, however I still think it is consistent with the ms66 grade. The blown up pics make the hits look bigger then what they actually are.
Wonderful reverse toning........
alot of folks feel that ms66's should be mark free which isnt the case, as a mark free coin should grade even higher.
good score and I bet you got it at a great price.

as the 50s progressed the master die detoriated and wore down causing some details to be lacking, and causing the quailty of the Franklin strike to suffer as the 50s progressed, till the die was re-worked in 1960......
compare a 48 Frankie with a late 50s frankie and you'll see this is the case.....

The hits are quite minor--the coin is really quite clean... and the lustre really good, as it's not subdued at all by the toning like many frankies...

I knew Lucy would like this coin.
Maybe someday I can show her mine (Frankies, that is)!

WHOA THERE!
On a quarter or a dime, those type of marks may doom a coin to a 5 holder.

<< <i>Yes, but NGC holders are made so you can bring the coin closer to the label side of the slab, but not to the back of the slab--if it were reverse up, I could bring the color to the top of the slab for a better picture >>
Then you should just crack it out and keep it raw!

Not very familiar with toning, could someone explain why it would turn bluish?
Nice coin though.

<< <i>I love the back of this coin!

these coins come from mint sets. the us mint used double cardboard holders as well as a paper covering.
the silver reacted with the sulphur from the cardboard and paper, simply growing a oxide of a certian thickness which results in
a wide spectrum of colors, in this case, a lovely blue....
the reverse of this coin obviously reacted to its conditions more then the obverse........
depending on what type of conditions a coin is stored will affect the reaction rate and growth of a oxide...

<< <i>Reverse holder? I didn't even know they would do that. I'm way too uptight to have one of my coins facing the wrong direction. >>
They do it if requested... I have quite a few reverse stunners, so I'm not sure if they do this without the request... the graders, though, determine whether the request is warranted...
