Regrade Angst!

Okay, I own a coin that I felt was a regrade candidate. Not only was it a candidate but I felt sure that it was a lock for at least one grade (and felt it might have had a shot at a two grade uptick). The coin was a 76 Trade Dollar in 63 (I'll try to get a post up shortly). Flawless fields, superior strike, great consistent luster. One on the most perfect coins that I own (better than most 64's that I own). Sent it in for a regrade in the existing holder and it comes back as a 63. Nuts!!!!!! Now faced with choices:

- Resubmit in the holder again
- Crack out and resubmit in the holder (does the existing holder bias the decision?)
- Go to the other TPG and get a better grade
- Do nothing and rest comfortably knowing that the coin is really a 64 (but mislabeled in the holder)

Argh!!!!!!!

Don't you just hate to have this internal discussion. If the coin was marginal, then I swallow the pain and move on, but to KNOW the coin is wrongly graded causes the issue. Sorry for the Friday afternoon rant. Writing it down is part of the therapy.

What holder is it in currently?? Yes, many people believe that there is a holder bias at pcgs, and that may influence your decision. Is this something that you want to sell soon, or are you going to keep it for the long haul??

On a pcgs regrade the coin is supposed to removed from the holder and graded raw and the graders are not supposed to know its current grade.

The current grade is not supposed to be factored into the result.

One option might be a presidental review. Supposedly if your coin is not upgraded you get a explination as to why.

    Placid,

Good idea!!!! I'd love for someone to explain why the coin was limited in its current grade.

I recently sent in two coins in their holders for upgrades.
    1916-D dime was g06 went vg08
    1925-S dime was ms62fb went ms63fb.

They crack the coins out of the holders. Delete the certificate numbers (will show no grade in a set, and if you look up the cert number it says it does not exsist), the coins are then run through the system raw, and the coins are assigned new cert number.

    I was easy for me!

  • All my regrades have come back in new holders even if they didn't upgrade. I would call and ask PCGS about that one.image

  • What about a coin being crossed over to PCGS.
Does the grader know what it was graded and what other service it was graded by?

I'm sorry but I would never suggest a presidential review.I have learned through experience that avenue is useless.Out of all the presidential reviews I've heard or seen, only one in ten get reversed. That tells me it isn't woth the postage both ways nor the $30 fee.

  • Thank you MANOFCOINS for clarifying.

So I can send in a PCGS graded coin for a review if I wasn't the original person that submitted?
For some reason I thought that I had to be the original submitter.

Not a 65 due to marks in the left field and doesn't have the necessary blast of luster. Looks 64 as far as the surface quality, however, there could be a touch or rub or diminished luster that mandate the 63 grade. Why don't you bring it to ANA and get a few opinions [including HRH] before you spend anymore money on it?
  • thats harsh !
i have a proof cam Jeff, tough coin from 57,its in an ngc holder.
very seldom seen frosty in my price range anyway.
i have to send it in for a xover,if i crack it and send it raw and the graders having a bad day my Cam comes back brilliant and i lose about 275.00 instantly.
i had a PCGS 1964 deep cam that was almost identicle to the 57 so it should cross but i aint got the frankies to crack it out !
