Why did this quarter sell for so much?

It doesn't show the grade, so I emailed the guy and he said he would send me the pics of the full slab. But I never got them.
I don't see how an MS61 could go for the price of an MS65. Especially with such small pictures.
Anyone know why?

1937-D Washington Quarter MS-61 ANACS
skamieniecki would have won it for $73.05, but sdo25123 showed up and wanted it bad enough to hack away at his bid until he won it.
skamieniecki was probably just trying to prevent a snipe attack and figured above $111 was stupid money?

I don't understand why bidders would do this. Why not just snipe your best bid 2-3 seconds before the auction ends? It's a lot easier, and you're not going to pay more. If you win, great. If you lose, someone wanted it more than you did and you didn't pay more than you were comfortable with paying.

I've heard rumors that there is a real world going on outside of the Internet.

Nice condescending answer, but it's not relevant in this case.
Look at the bid history. The ultimately winning bidder put in six, count 'em, six, separate bids in the last 12 minutes of the auction -- the final one coming six minutes before the end, and presumably was watching to the end. Thus, this person was clearly spending several minutes watching the auction end in real time. Thus they weren't in this "real world" you speak of. So if you're going to do that, my point stands: why not just snipe your best bid just before the end?
[EDIT: I also wonder if that small picture is hiding something. From a distance, this looks MUCH nicer than MS-61 to me. Then again, I don't know all than much about grading mint state Washingtons.]
Everytime sdo entered a bid, it told him the proxy bid was higher
So he tried again, and again (hacked away) and was denied each time.
This make sdo mad, because he wanted to win. So he thought about it and rasied his bid. Why pay $113.61 if you can buy it for $85.55?
It's the highest, not the last, bid that wins.

Sniping is for automated programs, or people who can schedule their lives around eBay, and even those have to get up to go to the bathroom once and awhile (at least I hope so)

Looking for PCGS AU58 Washington's, 32-63.
Seller has to be happy he got MS65 sales price for a MS61 coin.
<< <i>Shill bidder perhaps? >>
Perhaps and then again, maybe not. Without having seen the quarter personally, maybe this guy sees something about it he really likes. I have seen other bidders and am also guilty of bidding high on a coin because I felt it had "potential" OR just got so caught up in the bidding that I just HAD to have it.
Now I've learned that if I really want a coin, in an effort to keep the price as low as possible, I won't bid at all, until the very end of the run!

ANACS is quite conservative and there are many cherries to be picked in their holders. Then again, when you get the coin in hand it may become clear why they graded it 61, perhaps a rim nick or scratch we cannot see. Can't beat the free shipping!
