NGC Rim Grading

To dispel any notion that NGC doesn't take into consideration the condition of the rim in their grading, I asked NGC for clarification on this. Here is their answer and a statement toward their slabs in general.

First, I would like to dispel any myth or urban legend that we do not grade the rim and edge of a coin. In fact, many of the pieces that we do not holder are for rim issues, i.e. rim filing, dings, and damage.

At this time we do not plan on changing the color, thickness, material, or inner holder parts used. We feel that our current holder is the safest in the industry and provides the best long term protection available at present.

Thanks,

I still think they should consider using the black insert for their holders...... mmmmmm...... black and gold..... image

Interesting. Where do you suppose CW came up with that?

A few months ago I sold an 1896 Morgan for MS60 money because it had a good rim bump that I suspected would cause it to be BB'ed at PCGS. The guy who bought it from me sent it to NGC where it was graded as a 64.
  • I got a Morgan kicked back recently for "rim filing" .

The black and gold combo does look nice. They should give you a choice!!!
