Yes, I've received it, too. While the URL looks legit, it only DISPLAYS that URL while redirecting you somewhere outside of the paypal.com domain.

And PayPal doesn't address you by "Dear PayPal user." They address you by name in their e-mails. This one is definitely 100% SCAM.
  • never click a link in an email.
log in normally and then check the account !
there is a bug in the browser that allows a re-direct even if the mail came from HTTPS.

Scam mail usually gets bulked into my spam mail folder before I even report it as spam. Yahoo depends on folks clicking the "this is spam" button to automatically prohibit it from going into anyone else's inbox.

<< <i>I checked the link and it took me to PayPal. This may not be a scam. >>

It's a scam. In the actual email, the clicked link would take you someplace else besides PayPal.

Hint for the newbs: They're all scams. Even if they weren't originally, they are now. Given the quantity of scam emails from PayPal, eBay, Citi, and whomever else, no firm would dare send out a real email asking for account information anymore.

    Let me reiterate:

    THEY'RE ALL SCAMS.
  • Just opened a Paypal account this week. Thanks for the useful information.

Flaminio is right. This "phishing" stuff is so commonplace now, that I'm surprised people still get taken. It's pretty devious and I can see how an unitiated person would fall into the trap, but, geez, I thought the word was out by now.

I never answer an email from PayPal or eBay- I just delete them all, even the legit ones that don't ask for account info. If they need me, they know my snailmail address and my telephone number.

Likewise. Unfortunately, their increased communications costs get passed back to us in fees. The net was really cool before spammers took over our inboxes.

    Sigh.

If you get that email and you clicked that link, you've got REAL problems that can ruin you.
never click a link in an email.
log in normally and then check the account !
there is a bug in the browser that allows a re-direct even if the mail came from HTTPS.

They can access all your credit card info, your checking acct info, all from when you were verified, just by clicking that link.
I have the bottom half of the real email from pay pal that tells me it is a scam and will gladly provide here ot to whomever may need it. If they get a hold of all your personal info, which is what this scam is all about, they can ruin you before you wake up tomorrow!

Never open an email by clicking on the link. You now have to shut down and change all your credit card #s and checking acct that paypal has on file, by clicking that link. Pay pal will address you by your Name as will eBay. Alwayd remember that.
