A LESSON LEARNED - SUBMISSIONS ARE BACK

I am embarrassed to even make this post...but I am in such shock that I have to. Sent off 3 proof lincolns to burn up my free gradings that I received when my set reached 90%. First off let me say (and boy is this obvious) that I have absolutely no grading experience and I consider myself to be a "newbie" collector. Sent off what I thought were some brilliant Lincolns that I tried to cherrypick....and look what I got back:

72-S PR65
76-S PR66 CAM
78-S PR66 DCAM

OUCH! Not only was I was off base here....but now I'm stuck with these coins! Who would buy a 78' PR66 DCAM? The 69DCAM is $15.00! Guess I'll hang em' on the tree at Christmas time. A lesson learned.

It is amazing what people will buy on Ebay, you should get some money back.

Did you pull these out of proof sets, or did you buy them raw?

I have no clue on proofs. That's why I stick to biz strikes. I sent in a 1941 proof half thinking it was 67 minimum. It came back PR64. That was about four years ago, I havent sent in a proof sence.

  • I did that last year, I put my MS-67 and MS-68's on the Christmas tree and let everyone that came over for Christmas to take one coin home.

I would put them on eBay. Some people try to build the lowest possible graded sets and these coins might be needed by someone building such a set.

I keep my "lessons" in a grading box. I have a pretty good collection of AU-58's etc.

Ebay would be a good choice. You have a good chance at getting your money back. Or like you said Christmas Orniments!

I agree with Mark - keep them.

You will not realize much from selling them, so why not keep them for reference. Hopefully you will never repeat the pain you are feeling now. Consider it part of your education on coins.

I have kept some of my "near miss" cameos for just this reason.

  • Drool......a proof PR60 graded set.
Oooohhhh. Gives me the shivers just thinking about it.

Is there a grading category for a AUnc Proof?

Anyway, you need to really be critical of your coins, much more so than you should think.
Then when you send them in you'll likely be within a point of what they grade out as.
I find that is I am super critical, then I can come out the same or very close to the grades they give them.
During the late 60's and 70's the mint wasn't all that great on making collector coins, so they had a lot of
not so good examples. I remember proofs with thumb prints on them were pretty common for some years.

Only in the world of PCGS grading do we see these comments when the grading service gives out these kind of grades. Hey, I thought gem proof, gem proof cam and gem proof deep cameo were pretty good grades.

Unfortunately, it's not just about how the coins look. It's all about the M O N E Y.

    Again, just my opinion.

Don't feel so bad. I have had some pretty good luck on some of the coins I have sent in. I made an 03d kennedy in 68, it was the first made last year. Made a couple in 67. Then I get 2 04 proof eagles,
don't bother looking at em too close, submit em, and I get back a 69dcam and a 68dcam. The 68 is a real rarityimagewhen you consider there are only 6 of em out of 3147 coins graded!! I did about as well with this years nickel. Sent in a bunch and got back 64-65's. I consider myself a newbie also. Only been seriously collecting slabs for about 3 years, although I have a bunch of raw coins, some I have had for years. It never ceases to amaze me how coin can look so good to me, but you put it in the hands of a professional grader and it turns to crap!!!image Things will improve with time and experience. By the way, I have a young nephew that I give my lesson slabs to. He just loves em. The big smiles and the happiness he gets from them are well worth the price of the submissions!!image

Keep them for reference! That's how to learn. I have a box of body-bags and not-so-hot grades.
I go through it every now and then to "refresh" my memory so that I don't make the same
    mi$take again!

    OK, Mr P.
Since everyone so far has not acknowledged your post .. I'll bite ...

Since no one came over I'm assuming your tree still had the MS-67 and MS-68 slabed coins on it when you thew out your tree. But as everyday is like Christmas for you the tree might still be up ..
  • I feel your pain Ellewood. I've been submitting 1968-1975 Lincoln proofs for 7 years and PCGS says I've got a good eye for grade but not designation.
