I know, What is reasonable?

Can anyone give me a ballbark range of the least expensive patterns and what they are?

Thanks. Joe.

Circulated patterns start at $500. If you want a nice one, like one of the 1858 small cent patterns in PF63 or 1870 standard silver dimes in PF63, you have to pay at least $1000-1500. Most patterns are in the $5000-15000 range if you want nice ones.

  • Pattern pricing seens wierd to me. A nice J299 1963 indian cent (regular issue type introduced in 1864, usually with an interesting "metal turn") can be had in PF 65 for about $2-3,000 with a hundred or so struck. The predecessor flying eagle, the 1856, with thousands coined is acutally a "common" pattern, yet it sells for megabuck$.

    Go figure!!

That's because the 1856 flying eagle cent is included in the redbook, making it highly sought by all sorts of collectors. It is also included in most regular flying eagle sets as a normal piece struck for circulation.

Under a thousand to a couple thousand bucks for the more common ones depending on the condition.

I see very, very few patterns offered for under a grand. Hamrick has a J208 (one of the most common patterns) in 63 for $2400+ !

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I sold a few dozen for under a thou, but haven't seen many in the last year ( ish). But I haven't been spending much time on the cheapies either.

I would love to find a cent pattern with a hole in it. Something like 1885 J-1740. I saw a MS66 which is the highest graded one. It was way above my budget. I just think it would be cool to have one in my collection. I'm not interested in a whole series of them though.

As Dennis said, some circ patterns can be had for about $500. Right now, the pattern market is slowing down, so if you wait a few months, some of the other patterns (except FE patterns and the really spectacular patterns) will become more "reasonable." the "patterns" Braddick links are private strikes, but not really true patterns. As for the J-299, it should be easy to pick up a nice 65 in the $1,500 to $2,000 range right now. If you PM me with particular pieces you like, I'll give you ballpark figures.

There was a time once when patterns were very cheap. Alas, there was a time once when all the coins we fantasize about were fairly cheap. image

  • You will be hard pressed to find any nice patterns for under $1500. You you do find one, grab it.
  • I would love to have one, but it seems that I have no way of telling which are real and which aren't. I won't buy any until later in life though, when I win the lottery.image

Here's one I picked up at the ANA Young Numismatists Auction at the ANA seminar for $1,000. It was donated by Rick Kay.

The $1,000 was more for the YN's not for the coin.

No doubt about it. That was a pretty penny (excuse the pun) for that FE.
  • I've handeld a J-325 Postage Currency Act 10c for under $1500, and I think a couple of this var (J-325 to J-330) can be bought in that price range in PR60-63 grades. Neat and unusual patterns for the money...
