Should I send this Ugly Seated half back?

ARCOARCO Posts: 4,396 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just wanted to share a scan of this half I recently purchased.

Any opinions on the grade? I think it was listed as an AU50. Whether it is XF or AU I really didn't care because I liked the original look so much

Ugly? You're kidding right? I love circulated silver with that look that I call "black and grey". Very nice.

Do you want the pcgs grade or the local experts grade?

"Do you want the pcgs grade or the local experts grade?"

    Both would be nice.

Please send it to me Tyler. Looks like the toning matches my 1900-O dime. Nice! AU55 all day long.

Could grade anywhere from 45-55 at pcgs depending on how much luster remains.

Dip it, Tyler. Seated haves look MUCH better with that bright, fresh, shiny look. image

  • I love that look and that grade!

I've often thought I might like to try and put together a set of early commems,
trying to get that look. Some issues would be really tough, but I think it would
    be a fantastic looking set!

That's a super looking coin. I would guess AU 50-55.

Very nice Seated half. Your choice of the word "ugly" either means you were looking to provoke board members or perhaps you should switch to bright and shiny Kennedy halves. image

Seriously, from the photo it has the look of a perfectly original circulated half that would bring a premium. It does not surprise me it was graded as a 50, but in reality, there is too much wear and likely only a whisper of luster in the protected areas. The coin is a 45, but would bring strong money from Seated collectors.

P.S. As was said by a dozen or so folks in front of me . . . if you don't like it, just let me know . . . I know where it will find a nice home.

It's got a really nice, even look. I'd call it XF45 at best, though, gradewise

    Tyler,

Are you about to embark on another half dollar series ? Remember what you told me a few months ago, the 1870-CC is the show stopper. If you are starting this beautiful series, best of luck to you.

This coin's toning is very similiar to the toning of your Barber Half Dollar collection, so I can see why you got it.

The grade ? I'd give it a strong AU 50. Nice looking coin. Congrats.

The strong strike is normal on the 1861 Halves. The press operators must have had the dies set to come closer together than on other years coinage.
The devices will often have a proof look to them, and there is not much evidence of die abrasion.
The characteristic diagnostics of this coin are that of a business strike, in case anyone thinks it may be a circulated proof.

Nice. I love the color on it. In this day and age of seeing so many nicer coins made to look shiny and toned and totally fake-looking to fool some poor schmucks, this is what an original surface on a lightly circulated silver coin should look like after more than 140 years.

it's a proto-type xf-40. actually, i suspect it's very very slightly corroded, but being 100% original, who cares. OUTSTANDING addition to your collection - CONGRATS!!!

PeeeeeeeUuuuuuuuuuu. I would send it back so fast the stamps would still be wet when the seller got it.

By the way, please leave the sellers contact information here before you do. (Note to self: Arrange delivery with seller once received.)
