Blue Ribbon and Coin Care thoughts / Gradable

I heard PCGS and NGC will grade coins with the oil on them. Is that true and have you ever used either to remove surface junk?

I haven't heard that and I would be quite surprised if they did.

I don't see why they wouldn't grade them, if the oiliness was wiped off. Can't see 'em gradin' greasy coins, though.

PS- I have used both, to remove surface gunk, with good results. And Vaseline, too, as a cheaper alternative. But I don't recall submitting any of those coins to PCGS.

I vaguely recall submitting some Irish pennies that I'd Vaselined (and carefully wiped clean) to ANACS, and those slabbed just fine without net grading.

both products are suitable for CURATING coins. i'd anticipate the residue should be completely removed before submission to a plastic co, though.

Any residue could hide hairlines and other fine scratches. I can't believe a TPG would grade a coin with a substance covering the coin's surfaces.

You use a cotton Q-Tip to put Blue Ribbon on. It's not like you saturate the coin.
You put a drop on the cotton and roll it over the coins' surface to provide some protection from the elements.
Blue Ribbon is real good for protecting old copper. It's not made anymore, but is still available from some dealers, as well as on Ebay.

I've heard reports that blue ribbon is being made again.

Anyone ever notice how similar the icons are for Dorkkarl and Shamika? Is it a 'before and after'? Are they related? Have I worked so hard this week that I am seeing things that aren't there?

I use Blue Ribbon all the time. Coins slab that have been treated with this stuff.

I have to believe that Blue Ribbon is still being made. There is WAY too much of this stuff availble for sale for it to be leftover stock, or inventory.

I know they weren't making it for a while, but have to believe it is being made again. Maybe they tweaked the formula or something. I don't know.

My local dealer uses blue ribbon and I assume he submits most of his coins! Works semi well! My one question is..does blue ribbon remove toning from coins

I've assumed that the two icons are related: dorkkarl's exhibits the youthful excitement and naivete (sp?) of someone entering the numismatic world and eager to learn. Shamika's is the end result after this same collector is abused by scams, overgrading, dishonest dealers, and unacceptable TPG's......
