Mastro - oooohh, ahhhh

So many amazing lots, but this one struck a chord due to the determination that went into it.

1971 Topps ALL PSA 8 complete set

1971 seems to be in abundance as of late, does it not?

Steve Pekovich sold off his amazing 8.25 100% set last year (or is it two years already?) which was quite an amazing set.

The first PSA 9 of Pete Rose was sold to Bill Goodwin for approximately $15k - and it was bumped to a PSA 10 (this is in the post Baker/Rocchi days, too). I think that took place two years ago? Now the current Mastro auction has one PSA 9 Rose (1/4) and one SGC 96 Rose from the set.

There are basically five 1971 Topps sets that are currently complete (or over 95% complete) with ratings of above 8.0.

Mastro now adds on top of it six vending boxes from 1971 - plus the semi-high hoard that includes ridiculous numbers of certain cards, like 211 Killibrews and 380 Tony Perez cards. I think it is safe to say that the vast majority of this set now seems to be somewhat readily available in PSA 8 grade.

There is already 54,000+ graded from this set, with a PSA 8 hit of approximately 53% and a PSA 9 hit of over 3%.

Would be great to be top dog in this set (our very own Chris Renaud) - but populations only seem to be skyrocketing here for the vast majority of cards. There are only four non-variation cards from the set with PSA 8 populations less than 10 - two at Pop 9 and Ron Slocum and Claude Raymond at Pop 6.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

The utter splendiferousness of the Mastro writers' prose never fails to amaze me. This is my lot and the write-up makes even me reach for the white-out! (I'm an editor by trade). They neglected to put PSA 9 in the title, though.

I'll guess the hammer drops somewhere between $20,000 and $25,000.

I was a player in the registry for '71s for a while, but only in the PSA 6/7 range. Maybe if the pop of 8's keeps rising, though, I might get back in at the 8 level. It's a beautiful set and is from the year I was born.

I see your point, but if single cards are listed in Mastro, one can reasonably assume that they will be high grade. Most people will search by year or player, not necessarily by "PSA 9." Nevertheless, as a seller, I too would want that designated in the title.

Any guesses how much $$$ this owner has sunk in this set? 15K? More?

You never know, it could be as little as a few hundred packs back in 1971, plus grading fees.

You make it sound like grading fees on 752 cards are trivial. There are very few sets (this 1971 being one) that I would even pay for what the grading fees would be, let alone adding the value of the cards.

752 Cards = (700 @ $6 per card common grading)(52 @ 10 per card Ecomony grading) = $4720 before shipping and cost of original cards.
