PayPal Reversal

Has anyone had a payment for an item that they sold reversed, and if so, do you know what criteria PayPal uses to "investigate" the reversal?

Thanks,
Bill

    More details. Criteria?

I have reversed charges in the past. I send PayPal the facts as I know them and PayPal sends that to the seller for their response. PayPal then contacts me (buyer) with the response until resolved or I get my money back.

One issue that seems confusing is the insurance issue. Most sellers are under the illusion that stating in their auction that uninsured is sent at buyer's risk. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you can't prove you sent it to me I will get my money back. Insurance is for the SELLER NOT the Buyer.

Try to make this short. 2 months ago I sent a coin that did get lost in the mail. Post office said it left here and after that no record. After 3 weeks buyer wanted money back from paypal. Coin showed up and buyer returned it unopened to me. 4 weeks after that (this week) paypal emailed asking if it was ok to reverse the sell. Hope buyer has his money.

While I make insurance optional for small-ticket items (usually under $50 or so), I never ship without delivery confirmation, and I e-mail the buyer the tracking number as soon as I ship it out.
  • Exactly ...

I used to send everything with delivery confirmation until a payment got lost and on the tracking system it said the payment was delivered but knowing the seller I knew he wasn't just saying he never got payment. The payment probably went to a different a different Suite # in the complex.

I now send everything with Signiture Confirmation ... Now I know who signed for the item or payment.

Right, all delivery confirmation does is tell you that it was delivered SOMEWHERE. But there is no way to know where it was delivered to.

A seller friend told me PayPal said no to a Reversal but the buyer went to his CC company they did reverse it.

Not sure he gave me the whole story.

Absolutely true. And a buyer who makes a return is well-advised to insure the item as well. I made return on an item last year and insured it. The seller said he never got the item. The post office had to pay me.

  • Back in February I sold a coin (less than $100) on ebay that was immediately paid for with PayPal - I never heard anything from the buyer but positive feedback was left for me. In April I get notification from PayPal that they were "investigating" a reversal for the transaction. Long story short - I was never asked anything by PayPal and the transaction was reversed, so now I have no coin AND no money. Apparently the purchaser stiffed a number of folks shortly after buying my coin and is no longer registered with eBay. I was just wondering if others had any experience like this, as I sure do not know WHAT PayPal investigated? image

I have not received a satisfactory answer from them so I suppose I will just keep pestering them!

    Thanks,
    Bill

bartdog, What probably happened to you was that you either missed or never received the PayPal email asking fo your input. If you do not respond to the email you automatically lose your case. image

I have noticed many times when I have tried to email members using the eBay email system that the emails do not go through. (change of email, server down etc). To my knowledge PayPal does not try to contact you any way other than email. So if you don't get it, you are unfortunately out of luck.
