New Slab Idea?

keojkeoj Posts: 980 ✭✭✭
Okay, how about this for a new slab style: A round one (similar to a cointite holder but more substantial) with the relevant information micro printed on the peripheral edge (readable with is good loupe). These could be stackable and I would propose that just one size be made to accomodate all coins.

Good/Bad points:
- The grades wouldn't be obvious - I'm not sure if this is good or bad. Imagine the concept of actually having to look at the coin critically without the easy way out of just reading the grade on the holder. For people who deal in a lot of coins, probably a pain in the back side, for those that look at coins critically, I would imagine this is a better "buy the coin, not the holder" solution.
- They could easily be fit into albums or high grade cabinets - imagine that!
- A lot less storage required - most of the volume is in plastic these days.
- Personally, I'd love to see a holder that protected the coin well but still felt like a coin shape.
- They would be smaller so watch out where they roll or drop or get lifted or etc. Not that different though when people pass me the 2x2 mylar flips.
- Dealers could display many, many more without having to reach around back and give the classic "I know that they're in one of these boxes"
- Ah yes, imagine being able to see the edge of a coin?

It's good to be able to look at a coin critically instead of just the holder. But, you absolutely need to be able to easily see the date/mm.

    EVP,

Just so I'm clear on the idea, what you are noting is that the coins date and mm must be visible (and quite obvious) on the holder as well as the coin? As a dealer, I can see where you're coming from in terms on being a a pain in backside if your handling a lot of coins. Is that the reason?

Yup. The grade matters too, but should be secondary to the overall "look" of the coin. But, no getting around the date/mm.

Okay, I think that I have it solved. Imagine a lid on the reverse with the info printed on it. Flip the lid, see the backside of the coin and the date/mm. The lid doesn't have to flip, could hinge (like a loupe).

No. The date/mm needs to be immediately visible.

Then we could market rectangular plastic holders to place the round slab in so they store easily in the millions of slab boxes floating around out there........ image

    I like the idea.
I actually prefer ANACS holders b/c they are smaller. Storage is an issue for me.
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!
