Gold San Francisco Type Set

Does anyone have any opinions on whether it makes sense to start a gold type set of the San Francisco mintmark? It seems that there are tons of collectors of the "Southern mints" but there is not much following for S mintmarks. Do you think it is possible that this series is a little under-priced as compared to the rest of the gold coin market? I also noticed that there are no books specifically addressing the S mintmark, whereas there are several books that analyze the other mints. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Compared to the other mintmarks, Ss are fairly common. I would guess that's why there's less interest and books and things.

Doesn't make them any less cool, of course. And as a Bay Area resident, I find S-mint stuff especially nifty.

I think it's a good idea, I think you're right that early SF gold is underrated compared to southern gold, there are no books specifically about the early SF mint to my knowledge, although there are several nice chapters by Bowers and others.

I think it would be an excellent idea. To add some spice, you could try to get some of the 1866 issues that were struck with and without motto, Type I, II, and III Gold $1's and $20 Libs, one of the rare Indian "S" issues of the 20th Century, a Cal Gold piece, a Kellogg piece (and other territorials), the 1848 "CAL" quarter eagle, a Dahlonega coin from the 1850's struck from California gold. There's lots of cool gold coins to collect from San Francisco. Go for it! Maybe you will one day write the book!

Although there isn't a book on S-mint gold, there are a couple of good articles on Doug Winter's website (www.raregoldcoins.com - and they might be on the Pinnacle website as well). I believe that Winter is or was planning to write a book on S-mint gold.

I'd say good luck if you want to collect S-mint gold, especially the no-motto gold. I've only ever seen two dates of the eagles (1854 and 1856) and maybe one quarter eagle. I don't think I've ever seen a pre-Civil War no-motto S-mint half eagle in person at a coin show, not even at ANA. (At the 1996 NYC ANA, Winter was showing off a set of five S-mint half eagles - 1861 to 1865!)

Isn't Kagin going to do a book/promotion on S mints next year?
